A sheet registration apparatus for positioning sheets in a registered position on a work surface such as the document platen of a convenience copier/duplicator machine. The apparatus includes a bidirectional servo-controlled sheet transport for conveying the sheet over the work surface. A sheet sensing device is disposed within the path of sheet travel. A controller monitors the sensing device and activates a position control routine following the occurrence of a predetermined level change in the signal generated by the sensing device. At the end of the position control routine, the transport is stopped thereby positioning the sheet in the registration zone. The apparatus enables sheet registration for a machine operating in a duplex and/or simplex mode. The apparatus further enables registration at any point on the document platen.

A collated set of copies are formed by combining copies from the multibin collator and the second collator module.

A compliant guide assembly in a tape transport provides a precisely calibrated biasing force to an edge of a magnetic tape to precisely position the tape with respect to a read/write head. The compliant guide assembly includes a plurality of guide buttons and a spring assembly having a plurality of cantilever spring elements. A fixture is used for assembling and calibrating the compliant guide assembly. The fixture includes a base for receiving the spring assembly and the guide buttons and for aligning each guide button with one of the spring elements of the spring assembly. The fixture also includes a bias mechanism for biasing each spring element with a predetermined force. This force varies the distance between each spring element and its corresponding guide button and maintains these distances while each guide button is attached to its corresponding spring element.

Electronic alignment of paper feeding components in a machine such as an electrophotographic copier machine is achieved by placing an original master containing vernier calibrations on the document glass and a target master containing vernier calibrations in the copy paper bin. Thereupon, the machine is operated to produce a copy of the original master onto the target master producing a double set of vernier calibrations on the target master, which, when compared, provides information relating to skew angle, side edge relationship and leading edge alignment of the image to the copy paper. The vernier calibrations provide data which are keyed into a microprocessor controlled copy feeding servo mechanism to correct copy paper position and remove misalignment. The operation is repeated for various combinations of paper feed paths with techniques of original document placement and for duplex operation so that the copy paper matches image position for all modes of copier operation. For printer mode of operation, the master vernier is printed to produce the needed image.In addition, sensors are located in the copy paper path to automatically correct for deviations in the copy sheet feeding unit, caused by wear, for example, over a period of time.Sensors are also located in the document feeder so that corrections in the position of the copy paper may be made on an individualized and dynamic basis to electronically correct for misalignment of individual originals on the document glass.

The device includes a pair of independently servo-controlled motors disposed on opposite sides of the sheet. Each motor drives a nip roller which transports the copy sheet. Sensors are disposed to generate signals representative of sheet position in the X, Y and .theta. coordinates. A controller uses the signals to adjust the angular velocity of the motor so that the sheet is squared and is gated onto the work station. The sensors and controller are utilized to measure different parameters associated with the sheet.

A flexible disk drive head access mechanism optimized for automated manufacture is disclosed. The mechanism is a complete subassembly. As such, the mechanism can be handled by a robot, as the mechanism is automatically mounted to the disk drive's main frame member. The mechanism comprises a stepping motor having a metal output pulley which is wrapped by a metal band. The middle of the band is welded to the motor's output pulley. The two free ends of the band are welded to a flexible, low-mass band tensioner. This tensioner is a thin, elongated member which includes a U-shaped portion which is operable to tension the band about the pulley. Attachment of the ends of the band to the tensioner not only tensions the band, but also operates to bend the tensioner slightly toward the pulley, thus causing the band to self-center itself in a 360.degree. wrap about the pulley. In this way, rotary to linear output from the mechanism is assured. The low mass of the tensioner insures that the band is not damaged as the motor is handled by the robot, leaving the band and its tensioner unsupported and free to move. A damping arm is welded to the tensioner and operates to damp vibration of the tensioner when the mechanism is at the far end of its head access stroke. In this way, read/write errors are minimized.

The arms of the actuator are configured to enable selective and sequential movement of the collet, pressure pad and/or recording head arm in one direction toward a disk within the drive to establish a loaded, or operational, position and in the opposite direction away from a disk within the drive to establish an unloaded, or disk accessing, position with such positioning being determined by a force applying cam engageable with the actuator.

A servo-controlled recirculating automatic document feeder (RADF) includes a plurality of independently driven document transport devices. A picker mechanism separates documents in seriatim from a stack. An entry turnaround transport device buffers and delivers picked documents to a platen transport device for exposure. After exposure, the document is transported along a simplex or duplex path for duplex or simplex copying. The document is then buffered in an exit turnaround transport device and is subsequently returned to the stack. Each transport device is independently driven by a motor and a closed-loop servo. A common reference oscillator generates source signals for the servo-loops. A microcomputer operates on the source signals and generates reference signals for driving the transport devices.
