Abstract: A communications device transmitting/receiving signals to/from a mobile communications network includes one or more network elements providing a wireless access interface for the communications device. The wireless access interface includes plural communications resource elements across a host frequency range of a host carrier, and a first section of the communications resources within a first frequency range for preferable allocation to reduced capability devices forming a first reduced bandwidth carrier and a second section of the communications resources within a second frequency range for preferable allocation to the reduced capability devices forming a second reduced bandwidth carrier. Each of the first and second frequency ranges is within the host frequency range. The communications device is configured with a reduced capability to receive the signals only within a frequency bandwidth less than the host frequency range and equal to at least one of the first frequency range or the second frequency range.

Abstract: A method controlling wireless communication of a data block from a terminal device to a base station includes: making a first uplink transmission for the data block in association with a first retransmission protocol process and obtaining a corresponding first acknowledgement indication indicating whether the data block has been successfully communicated to the base station; making a second uplink transmission for the data block in association with a second retransmission protocol process and obtaining a corresponding second acknowledgement indication, the second transmission initiated before the first acknowledgement indication is obtained; and determining whether to avoid scheduling retransmission of data for the data block in association with the first retransmission protocol process based on the first and second responses, avoiding data retransmission in association with the first retransmission protocol process if either the first or second acknowledgement indications indicate the data block has been successfully communicated to the base station.

Abstract: A mobile communications network includes one or more network elements providing a wireless access interface for communications devices. The wireless access interface provides plural communications resource elements across a host frequency bandwidth, and includes, within the host frequency bandwidth, first communications resource elements within a first frequency bandwidth for allocation preferably to reduced capability devices to receive signals representing the data transmitted by the transmitter unit within the first bandwidth forming a first virtual carrier, the reduced capability devices each having a receiver bandwidth which is greater than or equal to the first frequency bandwidth but less than the host frequency bandwidth. Communications devices of different capabilities can be allocated communications resources within different frequency ranges according to their capability, which can relieve congestion on a center frequency of communications resources in which communications devices with a minimum bandwidth capability must receive communications resources for receiving down link signals.

Abstract: A mobile communications system transmitting/receiving data to/from communications devices includes one or more base stations, each including a transmitter and receiver. The transmitter and receiver provide a wireless access interface communicating data to/from the communications devices. The wireless access interface includes plural time divided sub-frames, at least one of the sub-frames including a first wideband control channel in a first part of each sub-frame communicating first signalling information, and a second narrow band control channel in a second part of each sub-frame. The base stations transmit a sleep indication signal to one or more of the communications devices, to realize a power saving to the communications devices which are not to receive the second signalling information for one or more sub-frames.

Abstract: A communications device transmits/receives data from a mobile communications network including one or more network elements forming plural cells. Each cell is allocated a cell identifier. For each cell the network elements provide a wireless access interface providing plural communications resource elements across a frequency range of a first carrier, and divided in time into plural frames. The one or more network elements transmit in one or more of the frames a synchronization sequence, each synchronization sequence providing an indication of a cell identifier. A controller calculates an estimate of a cell identifier from the detected synchronization sequence, and uses the cell identifier to transmit/receive the data to/from the mobile communications network via the wireless access interface. A relative temporal location of the synchronization sequence within the frame provides the communications device with an indication of the cell identifier of the cell.
