A process for preparing a composite which provides sustained release of chlorine dioxide which includes mixing a hydrophilic material containing an amine and a base with a hydrophobic material containing an acid releasing agent, the hydrophilic and hydrophobic materials being adjacent and substantially free of water, to form a mixture. The mixture is exposed to chlorine dioxide which reacts with the amine to form iminium chlorite which is decomposed by the base to form a chlorite salt within the hydrophilic material. The hydrophilic material is capable of releasing chlorine dioxide upon hydrolysis of the acid releasing agent.

Toughened thermosetting resins are disclosed comprising a thermosetting resin having a Tg of at least 150.degree. C., preferably 180.degree. C., and having dispersed substantially uniformly therethrough microspheres of a thermoplastic resin having a Tg of at least 150.degree. C., preferably 180.degree. C. It is preferred to use thermoplastic resins with functional groups on the surface thereof capable of bonding to an available group on the thermosetting resin. High performance structural composites made from such toughened resins are disclosed as well as the process of making such composites.

The present invention provides novel thermoset copolymers, and methods for preparing same, having both the strength and the thermo-oxidative stability required for high performance, high temperature applications. The copolymers comprise (a) a thermoplastic resin having unreacted phenolic OH groups, and (b) bis-oxazoline monomers which have been modified to have at least one substituent on the oxazoline ring selected from the group consisting of a methyl group, a group having at least a substituent capable of undergoing addition polymerization, and a cyclic group capable of undergoing ring opening polymerization.
