Abstract: A reconfigurable antenna is provided having a liquid metal in contact with an electrolyte with the liquid metal being in a first configuration. A plurality of electrodes includes a first electrode in contact with the liquid metal and a second electrode in contact with the electrolyte. A voltage source connected across the first and second electrodes applies a voltage of a predetermined magnitude and a predetermined polarity in order to move the liquid metal from the first configuration to a second configuration and to measure resultant current flow and modify the applied voltage based on the resultant current flow. Cessation of the applied voltage locks the liquid metal in this second configuration.

Abstract: A circular dielectric polarizer can have a cylindrical shape and include a dielectric slab, a dielectric core, and at least one air cutouts portions of the dielectric core. The dielectric slab can include a first dielectric material and have a thickness centered about an axis of the cylindrical shape. The dielectric core can include a second dielectric material. Portions of the dielectric core can be located on different sides of the dielectric slab. The dielectric core and the dielectric slab can form the cylindrical shape. The dielectric constant of the first dielectric material can be higher than a dielectric constant of the second dielectric material. Parameters of the circular dielectric polarizer, the dielectric slab, the dielectric core, and the at least one air cutout are selected to obtain approximately a 90 degree difference in phase in a signal passing through the circular dielectric polarizer at a target frequency.

Abstract: Various ring cells are disclosed herein that include a metallic ring patch and a ring slot to transmit or receive radio frequency (RF) signals. The disclosed ring cells use several dielectric layers that are separated by a low-dielectric foam layer upon which the ring patch is positioned. The ring slot is located below the foam layer. An electrically conductive fence formed curved electrically conductive walls or a circular pattern of electrical vias is positioned around the ring slot. Electrical feed lines are used to either supply electrical power to the ring cells or output RF signals that are received by the ring patch.

Abstract: A phased array antenna includes a resonant cavity, a plurality of feed waveguides, an array of slot antenna elements, and a plurality of phase shifters. The resonant cavity includes a boresight surface having a normal vector oriented with boresight for the phased array antenna. The plurality of feed waveguides is distributed along a perimeter of the resonant cavity and is configured to supply electromagnetic waves to the resonant cavity. The array of slot antenna elements is distributed about the boresight surface and configured to radiate a beam based on standing waves within the resonant cavity. Each of the plurality of phase shifters is respectively coupled with the plurality of feed waveguides and independently controllable to modify the respective phases of the standing waves to steer the beam.

Abstract: Unit cells for phased array antennas are described. The unit cells include a plurality of dipole antennas that are used to form a phased array antenna. In particular, the unit cells that form the phased array antenna each include a plurality of dipole antennas formed on a surface of a substrate that are arranged to collectively form a triangle. A plurality of the unit cells may be linked together to form a triangular lattice array having almost any desired size and aperture, thereby allowing the RF engineer the freedom to achieve a wide variety of performance goals when designing a phased array antenna.
