摘要： Liquid crystalline compounds having a comparatively high voltage holding ratio, high &Dgr;n and high &Dgr;&egr;, and excellent miscibility with known liquid crystalline compounds at low temperatures. The novel compounds have the formula (1) wherein R represents hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms; n1 and n2 are independently 0, 1, or 2 provided that the sum of n1 and n2 is 1 or 2; ring A and ring B independently represent 1,4-phenylene, fluorine substituted 1,4-phenylene expressed by the formula (a) in the specification or 1,4-cyclohexylene provided that at least one of ring A and ring B is fluorine substituted 1,4-phenylene expressed by the formula (a); Za, Zb, and Zc independently represent single bond, —CH2CH2—, —COO—, —CF2O—, or —CH2CH2CH2CH2—; Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6, and Q7 independently represent hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or methyl group provided that when at least one of Za, Zb, and Zc is —CH2CH2—, then Q2 is fluorine atom, and that when Za, Zb, and Zc are all single bonds, then Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6, and Q7 independently represent hydrogen atom or fluorine atom; Y represents hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or a halogenated alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms; and each atom constituting this compound may be replaced by its isotope.

摘要： A compound represented by the general formula (1) wherein R1 is an alkadienyl group having 4 to 10 carbon atoms in which a hydrogen atom may be substituted by a fluorine atom or the like; R2 is an alkenyl group having 2 to 10 carbon atoms in which a hydrogen atom may be substituted by a fluorine atom or the like; one or more non-adjacent methylene groups (—CH2—) in the alkadienyl group or the alkenyl group may be replaced by —O— or the like; rings A1, A2, A3 and A4 are each 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or the like in which a hydrogen atom may be substituted by a halogen atom; Z1, Z2 and Z3 are each a single bond, —CH2CH2—, —CF═CF— or the like; p and q are each 0 or 1. The above compound has a large elastic constant ratio, steep electro-optic characteristics and a little temperature dependence in a low temperature range, and so it is useful for the manufacture of a liquid crystal display device.

摘要： Liquid crystalline compounds which have excellent compatibility with other liquid crystal materials, especially at low temperatures, high voltage holding ratio, low threshold voltage, their small temperature dependency, high .DELTA.n, and broad liquid phase temperature range, the compounds being represented by formula (1)Ra--A.sub.1 --Z.sub.1 --A.sub.2 --Z.sub.2 --(--A.sub.3 --Z.sub.3 --).sub.m --A.sub.0 --Rf (1)(wherein m is 0 or 1; A.sub.0, A.sub.1, A.sub.2 and A.sub.3 represent a six-membered ring, ring A.sub.0 is 1,4-phenylene which may be substituted with 1 to 3 of F and/or Cl, rings A.sub.1, A.sub.2 and A.sub.3, independently of one another, are selected from trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene which may be substituted with one or more halogen atoms, cyclohexene-1,4-diyl or 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl; Z.sub.1, Z.sub.2 and Z.sub.3 represent a bridge between the rings and independently of one another, are selected from --(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --, --(CH.sub.2).sub.4 --, --CH.sub.2 O--, --OCH.sub.2 -- bonds, one or more hydrogen atoms in these bonds being optionally substituted with a halogen atom, or a single bond (--); Rf represents --OCF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 H or --OCF.sub.2 CFHCF.sub.3 ; and Ra is a straight- or branched monovalent organic radical of 1 to 20 carbons); liquid crystal compositions comprising at least one of the compounds; and liquid crystal display devices composed of the compositions.
