Abstract: An elevator system which generates a landing speed pattern having the advantages of both digital and analog based patterns, without the disadvantages of either, by generating a landing speed pattern which is a digital, i.e., absolute position, and analog composite. The absolute position of the elevator car in the landing zone of a target floor is detected at only a few points on each side of floor level, and an absolute pattern value is stored in memory for each such point. The stored speed pattern values are retrieved as the car arrives at each absolute position point and used for establishing the landing speed pattern, with the last such value being modified to provide a continuous pattern which smoothly blends with the next stored speed pattern value as the elevator car reaches the next absolute position point.

Abstract: An elevator system of the traction type having a direct current drive motor and a solid-state, dual-bridge converter power supply. Protective and monitoring apparatus reduce the probability of fuse blowing due to improper gating of a controlled rectifier device, and/or a power supply interruption, while enabling the system to override longer power supply interruptions without initiating shutdown in certain instances. The deceleration range of the elevator car is narrowed, when an orderly shutdown is required, by sensing predetermined parameters of the elevator system and logically selecting the value of a dynamic braking resistance in response thereto.

Abstract: An elevator system including an elevator car mounted in a structure to serve the landings therein, and an opto-electronic position detector for determining when the elevator car is within a predetermined distance from a selected landing. The position detector includes a source of electromagnetic radiation which is pulsed at a predetermined rate, such as a light emitting diode, and a photovoltaic device which provides an output current having a magnitude responsive to the level of the electromagnetic radiation it is subjected to, such as a photo transistor. The source of electromagnetic radiation and photovoltaic device are mounted in a common housing with a beam splitter, such as a half-silvered mirror, and this assembly is preferably mounted on the elevator car. A control device or target is mounted adjacent each landing to be served by the elevator car, with the control device including a retrodirective reflective surface or retroreflector. The housing is oriented such that the angle of incidence of a beam of electromagnetic radiation provided by the source of electromagnetic radiation strikes the retrodirective surface with an angle other than 90.degree.. The photovoltaic device is electrically biased to provide an output current regardless of the level of the electromagnetic radiation applied to the photovoltaic device. When the photovoltaic device receives electrical radiation, such as from the retrodirective surface, its output current changes, and means responsive to changes in the output current energizes a translating device when the output current changes at a rate indicating the photovoltaic device is receiving the pulsed electromagnetic radiation from the source thereof.

Abstract: Transportation apparatus, such as escalators and moving walks, having an electrically released, magnetically set brake, and a servo loop for regulating the brake coil current. Brake voltage and brake current feedback are both used in the regulation of the brake current, with the values of the voltage and current feedback being selected to cause electromagnetic flux produced by the brake coil current to substantially cancel the magnetic flux produced by permanent magnets over the operating temperature range of the brake. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the brake current is pulsed continuously while the transportation apparatus is operated, to prevent transient excursions of the brake current from initiating and maintaining partial setting of the brake.

Abstract: A friction driven tachogenerator having a friction drive wheel in contact with a movable member. The tachogenerator is compliantly and frictionlessly mounted, and at least one pressure roller is disposed in tangential, rolling contact with the friction drive wheel. The pressure roller biases the friction wheel against the movable member to provide a predetermined contact pressure between the friction wheel and movable member without applying a significant load to the shaft and bearings of the tachogenerator. The compliant and frictionless mounting of the tachogenerator is devoid of friction sources which can interfere with the sensing of velocity oscillations by the tachogenerator.
