    Abstract: A sputtering method is for forming, in a vacuum chamber, an initial layer on a film formation target object and then further forming a second layer on the initial layer therein, and the method includes: in the vacuum chamber, arranging surfaces of a pair of targets to face each other while distanced apart from each other at a preset distance and to be inclined toward the film formation target object placed at a lateral position between the targets, and then sputtering the targets by generating a magnetic field space on the facing surfaces of the pair of targets, and thus forming the initial layer on the film formation target object by using particles sputtered by the sputtering; and further forming the second layer on the film formation target object at a higher film forming rate than a film forming rate of the initial layer.

    Abstract: A filter medium comprising first and second filter mediums joined together. The first filter medium provides relatively large voids and has high porosity, while the second filter medium provides relatively small voids and has low porosity. Raw water is mainly introduced into the first filter medium, and water branching therefrom flows through the second filter medium, at which biological filtering is conducted by aerobic microorganisms breeding therein.

    Abstract: In a water purification apparatus in which a granular filter medium is washed by agitation imparted to the filter medium, a pipe adapted for collection of purified water is mounted within the heap of precipitated granular filter medium and enclosed by a filter mesh to prevent outflow of the filter medium. Sliding contact elements such as turns of a wire wound about the collecting pipe or linear brush-like members inserted on the collecting pipe are also provided between the pipe and the filter mesh so that both the inner and outer surfaces of the filter mesh may be cleaned during countercurrent washing of the filter medium for assuring optimum water permeation at all times.
