The recording layer (3) comprises fine crystal grains (7) dispersed in a matrix (6) composed of a dielectric such as SiO2. The recording layer (3) has a thickness of 7 to 15 nm, and the fine crystal grains (7) have a particle diameter of 3 to 7 nm. The fine crystal grains (7) are made of an Ag—Pd—Cu alloy composed of 0.3 to 25 mass % of Pd and 0.3 to 25 mass % of Cu, the balance being Ag and unavoidable impurities. Information is recorded or reproduced by irradiating a blue-violet semiconductor laser having a wavelength of 380 to 430 nm to this optical information recording medium.

An information playback apparatus includes a first FIR filter, ideal signal generator, weighted equalization error calculator, and coefficient calculator. The first FIR filter generates an equalized waveform by equalizing, to a partial response waveform, a playback data string obtained by playing back a recorded signal recorded on an information recording medium. The ideal signal generator generates a target waveform serving as an equalization target. The weighted equalization error calculator calculates a data string by performing convolution computation for an equalization error which is a difference between the equalized waveform and the target waveform, on the basis of one of the playback data string and the equalized waveform input from the first FIR filter and the target waveform input from the ideal signal generator. The coefficient calculator calculates a tap coefficient for the first FIR filter on the basis of the data string input from the weighted equalization error calculator, and outputs the tap coefficient to the first FIR filter. An information playback method is also disclosed.

There is disclosed an optical information recording medium having phase-change recording films whose the transmittance can be made substantially uniform irrespective of the presence or absence of recording. There are also disclosed methods for recording, reading, and erasing information well at a high density on such a medium. Each of the phase-change recording films other than the top one has a phase-change recording film for recording and erasing information by a phase change caused by illumination of laser light. A transparent upper protective film is formed on the phase-change recording film to protect the phase-change recording film mainly against thermal deformation during recording and erasing of information. A transparent lower protective film is formed under the phase-change recording film to protect the phase-change recording film mainly against thermal deformation during recording and erasing of information. A foundation interference film is formed under the transparent lower protective film to adjust the transmittance of the phase-change recording film for the laser light.

The method for feeding the zinc gas according to the invention includes a step for introducing melt zinc into a zinc gas evaporation apparatus, a step for generating the zinc gas from the melt zinc by inputting electric power corresponding to a rate of feed of the zinc gas to allow zinc to cause self-heating by high-frequency induction heating, a step for introducing the generated zinc gas into a gas heating apparatus, and a step for heating the zinc gas by resistance heating to form a superheated zinc gas. An apparatus for feeding the zinc gas according to the invention is applied to the method, and includes a zinc gas evaporation apparatus, a gas heating apparatus and a control apparatus.
