    摘要: Synthetic textile articles (e.g., filaments, fibers, yarns, fabrics and the like) and processes of making the same are provided which include flame-retardant SAP particles. The SAP particles are most preferably hydrated with an aqueous flame-retardant solution. In this regard, the flame-retardant solution may consist essentially of water alone or a water solution containing one or more water soluble inorganic flame retardants. When SAP particles are hydrated with an aqueous inorganic flame retardant solution, the SAP particles may thereafter be dried to remove substantially the water component. In such a manner, the inorganic flame retardant will remain as a dried residue physically entrained within the SAP particles. As such, the SAP particles serve as a physical matrix in which the inorganic flame retardant is homogenously dispersed. The SAP particles may then be chemically or physically affixed to the textile article in an amount sufficient to render the article flame-retardant.

    摘要: Described herein are pharmaceutically acceptable compositions comprising fullerene molecules dispersed in vesicles comprising phosphatidylcholine (PC) phospholipid molecules and non-PC phospholipid molecules suspended in aqueous solution. In preferred embodiments, the phospholipid molecules are substantially uniformly organized into vesicles composed of one or more lipid bilayers and the fullerene molecules are substantially uniformly distributed within the lipid bilayers of the vesicles. Methods of forming these fullerene containing liposomes are also described. Such fullerene containing liposomes provide carriers for delivery of fullerenes for cosmetic, therapeutic, and imaging applications among other uses.

    摘要: Flame-retardant synthetic resin articles and methods of making the same are provided whereby flame-retardant SAP particles are incorporated into synthetic resins, especially curable thermosettable resins. The SAP particles are most preferably hydrated with an aqueous flame-retardant solution.     摘要: An interferometric sensing arrangement includes an interferometric sensor having an optical path length that varies depending on one or more physical parameters to be measured using the interferometric sensor. One or more light sources are used to generate light at three or more predetermined different fixed wavelengths. In a preferred example embodiment, four fixed wavelength lasers are used to generate light at four predetermined different fixed wavelengths. An optical coupler couples the multiple wavelength light to the interferometric sensor, and a detector measures an amplitude response of an interferometric signal produced by the interferometric sensor. A controller determines the optical path length based on the measured amplitude response.

    摘要: A fiber-optic method for making simultaneous multiple parameter measurements employs an optical fiber sensor having at least one long period grating disposed therein. An excitation is created in the optical fiber sensor wherein a plurality of evanescent field sensing depths result. At least two long period grating signatures are created. When the optical fiber sensor is exposed to at least one material, changes in the material are identified by simultaneously measuring and comparing shifts in each long period grating signature; correlating the shifts to changes in the material; and solving a series of equations that compare changes in the coupling wavelength for a specific loss band. A reactive coating may be applied to the optical fiber sensor proximate to the long period grating such that changes in the reactive coating as it reacts with the material may also be monitored.

    摘要: Biologically acceptable surgical barrier materials are comprised of a polyelectrolytic complex of chitosan and sodium alginate. The chitosan is deacetylated in an amount between about 40 to about 60% and has a molecular weight (Mw) between 50,000 and 375,000 g/mol. The barrier materials may be formed by mixing a two-component material system whereby one component comprises the chitosan and a second component comprises the sodium alginate and directing such a mixture (e.g., via air-assisted spray nozzle) toward a surgical site in need of the material. A polyelectrolytic complex of the chitosan and sodium alginate will thereby form in situ. Suitable ionic cross-linkers may be provided in the individual components, e.g., calcium chloride with the chitosan component and sodium tripolyphosphate with the sodium alginate component.

A fiber optic interrogator may be optically coupled to the fiber optic sensor and configured to measure strain. A method comprises embedding a fiber optic sensor with a buffer material in or on a flexible filament structure. Thereafter, the buffer material is activated via heating or curing to locally adhere the fiber optic sensor to the flexible filament structure to create a local bond. The local bond transfers strain from the flexible filament structure to the fiber optic sensor.

    摘要: The present disclosure relates to optical switching devices and switch modules that are designed for long-term security monitoring of high-value infrastructure access entry points. Embodiments in accordance with the present disclosure include optical switches based on fiber-Bragg gratings whose operating wavelengths are based on the presence or absence of magnetic coupling between an embedded permanent magnet and an external element. By monitoring the spectral position of the operating wavelengths and/or the magnitude of a light signal at the operating wavelengths, the state of the magnetic coupling can be determined and used as an indicator of whether the security switch has been actuated.
