摘要: This invention is a surgical instrument and specifically is a device for delivering embolic coils to a selected site within the vasculature of a human body via use of a catheter. The invention further includes the coils. In particular, the device uses embolic coils having interlocking ends, e.g., clasps or hooks, on the ends of the coils. The coils may further be secured to each other by a control wire within the catheter. Retraction of the optional control wire into the catheter body uncouples the distal coil.

摘要: This is a section of a catheter used in making a catheter assembly suitable for accessing a tissue target within the body, typically a target which is accessible through the vascular system. The catheter section uses a braided metallic reinforcing member, typically of superelastic alloy ribbon, situated within the catheter body in such a way to create a catheter having an exceptionally thin wall, controlled stiffness, high resistance to kinking, and complete recovery in vivo from kinking situations. The braid may have a single pitch or may vary in pitch along the axis of the catheter or catheter section. The braided ribbon reinforcing member typically is placed between a flexible outer tubing member and an inner tubing member to produce a catheter section which is very flexible but highly kink. resistant. The catheter sections may be used alone or in conjunction with other catheter sections either made using the concepts shown herein or made in other ways.

摘要: This is a device for capturing and removing bodies or articles from within a vessel, such vessels as may be found in the vascular system or the genital urinary tract. It includes a core wire which has attached at its distal end a plurality of fibers. The core wire may be introduced through a catheter to a selected site and further advanced and "twirled" to engage the offending foreign body. The retriever and its targeted foreign body are then withdrawn using the catheter.

摘要: This invention is a guidewire for guiding a catheter and is used for accessing a targeted site within a lumen system in a body. The guidewire or guidewire section has a wire core, a distal tip region, a polymeric tie layer, and a lubricious coating. The tie layer is preferably constructed to provide for sections of varying flexibility along the length of the guidewire. Variations of the tie layer provide for axially spaced sections of varying flexibility, radially layers of varying flexibility of both. In a special variation, the tie layer is constructed with at least one section providing increased stiffness distally.

摘要: This invention relates to a new technique for preparing metal devices such as guidewires for the subsequent attachment of hydrophilic coatings. The invention also relates to guidewires and other devices made according to that method. In one embodiment of the method of this invention, a hydrocarbon residue undercoat is applied to a metal guidewire core by plasma deposition. A photoactive hydrophilic polymer is then deposited on the hydrocarbon residue coating and activated by ultraviolet light. The hydrocarbon residue coating acts as a tie layer between the hydrophilic polymer and the metal guidewire core apparently by providing C--C bonds for the covalent linking of the coating material to the tie layer. The resulting article of this invention is a guidewire having the maneuverability of a metal guidewire and the biocompatibility of a lubricious, hydrophilic polymer.

摘要: This invention is a single-lumen balloon catheter and assembly having a variable stiffness shaft that allows for greater guidewire trackability and proximal pushability than previous designs. The catheter has an elongate tubular body that is made of inner and outer coaxial tubes, the inner tube being made of proximal and distal sections, the proximal section being stiffer than the distal section and the distal section being stiffer than the outer tube.

摘要: A vasoocclusive coil for placement in the vasculature of an animal to form thrombus in a selected site such as an aneurysm or AVM. The device involves a primary coil form having thrombogenic fibers placed on the coil in a specified fashion. The coil will pass through the lumen of a vascular catheter in the primary coil form and evolve into a convoluted or complex secondary form when ejected from the catheter's distal end. The fibers are attached to the coil and cooperate with the coil so that upon ejection from the catheter, the convoluted coil forms a shape in which the central region or secondary coil form center that contains the majority of these fibers.

摘要: This invention is a single-lumen balloon catheter having a valve seat on the distal end of the catheter, distal of the balloon, which may be operated by a control wire having a valve plug disposed on the wire. The valve seat may be engaged by the valve plug from either direction, depending on the installation of the control wire. In either event, if the valve plug is installed distally of the valve seat in the catheter lumen, the valve is closed by pulling on the control wire (or moving the control wire in a proximal direction) and introducing fluid through the catheter lumen through the balloon. Alternatively, the guidewire, with its integral valve plug, may be introduced from the proximal end of the catheter and may traverse the body of the balloon to engage the valve seat in the distal end of the catheter. Pushing on the control wire will seat the valve, allowing the introduction of fluid through the catheter lumen to inflate the balloon. The latter arrangement allows the control wire to be interchanged with other guidewires a physician may wish to use. The balloon provided for in this invention is of a single length and does not change its axial length as it is inflated.
