摘要: A method of operating a multi-processor video encoder by determining a target size corresponding to a preferred number of bits to be used when creating an encoded version of a picture in a group of sequential pictures making up a video sequence. The method includes the steps of calculating a first degree of fullness of a coded picture buffer at a first time, operating on the first degree of fullness to return an estimated second degree of fullness of the coded picture buffer at a second time, and operating on the second degree of fullness to return an initial target sized for the picture. The first time corresponds to the most recent time an accurate degree of fullness of the coded picture buffer can be calculated and the second time occurs after the first time.

摘要: A binary data encoding and decoding technique that alternates between starting polarities of a signal for both each occurrence of a binary 1 and each occurrence of two or more consecutive binary 0's. To encode a binary 1, the signal is one polarity for one-half of a bit interval and then the other polarity for the other half of the bit interval. To encode a binary 0, the signal remains at a zero level, unless there are two or more consecutive binary 0's, in which case the signal will be one polarity for the second half of the first binary 0 bit interval, the other polarity for the first half of the second binary 0 bit interval, and repeat this waveform for every for every two adjacent binary 0's. Decoding occurs by examination of either the signal level as compared to predetermined cut-levels, or the time equivalent distance between the peaks. In the first case, if the signal is above the upper cut-level or below the lower cut-level, a binary 1 is decoded; if it is between the upper cut-level and the lower cut-level a binary 0 is decoded. Alternatively, every occurrence of a peak is decoded as a binary 1 and the number of binary 0's between these binary 1's is determined by the time equivalent distance between peaks.

摘要: A method of adjusting the sensitivity of a receiver requires the association of a network address of a remote network device, such as a computer, with a first port of a multiport network device, such as a switch. The reception of the network address of the remote network device at a second port of the multiport network device indicates the possible occurrence of a cross-talk condition between networks coupled to the first and second ports. Accordingly, the sensitivity of a receiver associated with the second port is reduced in an attempt to reduce the sensitivity thereof to a point at which cross-talk signals, generated as a result of the cross-talk condition between networks coupled to the first and second ports, are no longer detected. The sensitivity of the receiver may be reduced by increasing a noise threshold level below which signals are not detected.

摘要: Enhanced collision detection in an Ethernet network, particularly useful for passive nodes using receive mode collision detection. When a transmitting node detects a collision, for example, using transmit mode collision detection, it activates a current sink at the node further reducing the DC potential on the line. This reduced DC potential assists in overcoming the low frequency impedance which may exist between the transmitting node and a remotely located passive node.

摘要: An apparatus for monitoring and testing a twisted pair, particularly useful for an Ethernet network. First and second DC currents alternated with one another are applied to both ends of the line, asynchronously. By monitoring the potential on the line, a determination is made as to the condition of the line. For example, shorted, crossed, improperly terminated or open conditions can be detected. A visual indication of the condition of the line is provided and additionally, the visual indication provides an indication of the traffic level in the network.

摘要: A method of, and an apparatus for, providing broadband services to multiple remote units located at a client premise via a single communication line are provided. Authorization data is communicated from distribution equipment to the remote units and the authorization data authorizes one of the remote units to transmit data to the distribution equipment. The authorization data is included in a DSL frame and is sequentially changed thereby sequentially to authorize each remote unit one at a time to transmit data. The distribution equipment provides the authorization data in a control word of a frame header of a VDSL frame.

摘要: A constant bit rate single program encoded transport stream is demultiplexed from a statistically multiplexed MPEG transport stream by separating a variable bit rate program from the multiplexed MPEG transport stream, loading the sequence of pictures that form the variable bit rate program into a smoothing buffer at a rate that does not exceed a desired constant bit rate and transferring the picture from the smoothing buffer at times indicated by decode time stamps associated with the pictures respectively. If a picture of the sequence becomes available no later than a specified amount of time prior to the picture's decode time stamp, then that picture is loaded into the smoothing buffer commencing the specified amount of time prior to the time indicated by the picture's decode time stamp. If a picture of the sequence becomes available later than the specified amount of time prior to the picture's decode time stamp, then that picture is loaded into the smoothing buffer as soon as possible.
