Abstract: A tire chopping apparatus includes a rotor assembly with a plurality of circumferentially and axially spaced rotor teeth which cooperate with a plurality of stationary teeth supported on a shear bar assembly to shearingly engage tire carcasses to reduce the carcasses to smaller fragments. A plurality of axially spaced guards extend outwardly from the shear bar assembly toward the rotor assembly and limit the size of fragments which can pass through a shear zone formed by the interengaging rotary and stationary teeth. The guards may be in the form of bridge plates spanning the rotor assembly or upstanding guard plates which extend upwardly from the shear bar assembly and include a distal end which extends outwardly toward and in horizontally spaced relation to the rotor mandrel.

Abstract: A shredder (2) for shredding a variety of different materials includes a fixed framework provided with a cutting assembly (20) having at least two counter-rotating cutting arrays (22, 24) each comprising a plurality of cutters (46) and a movable framework provided with a tensioning arrangement (100) for applying the same tension to each of the cutting arrays (22, 24) to shred material fed to the cutting arrays (22, 24) by a telescopically sided chute (10) having a tapering mouth (14) and a throat (16). The movable framework is movable with respect to the fixed framework in accordance with operation of an adjustment means (102) to alter the tension applied to the cutting arrays (22, 24) in order to apply constant tension to the cutting elements (46) to compensate for wear of the cutting elements (46) during use of the shredder.

Abstract: In a method for disposing of waste matter such as waste tire pieces by using first and second shredding members each having shredding blades, the waste matter is introduced into a space between the shredding blades of the first and second shredding members and shredded or torn off into fine chips by operating the first and second shredding members, while partially caught by grooves formed in opposite faces of the shredding blades of the respective shredding members. By moving the first and second shredding members relative to each other in opposite directions to impart a shearing force to the waste matter in the space between the shredding blades, the waste matter is effectively torn off into pieces. When a waste tire is processed in an apparatus for practicing the method, it is successfully separated into rubber parts and wires with high efficiency.

Abstract: A stable aqueous suspension of water-soluble polyacrylamide particles is in a saturated solution of an ammonium salt. The polyacrylamide particles are characterized by a particle size of about null150 mesh, and preferably null270 mesh, with null400 mesh most preferred. The suspension is at least about 2.5% by weight polyacrylamide. When the ammonium salt is ammonium sulfate, PAM concentrations as high as about 15% by weight can be achieved while still being easily flowable. The suspension is made by stirring the small particle PAM into the saturated ammonium salt solution. The PAM can be quickly dissolved to form a less concentrated PAM solution by adding the suspension to water or to a dilute solution, which can include calcium salts or other soil enhancers.

Abstract: A slow speed, high torque shear technology is disclosed having optional configurations and attachments for its construction and methods for reconfiguring existing shears to improve performance, and maintenance economics. A method is provided for the readily replacement of individual cutters and tooth modules, reconfiguration of cutter and tooth assemblies in a mix and match manner, in combination with matching anvils having replacement cutting elements with multiple cutting faces. Alternative embodiments are provided illustrating methods of configuration of various types of cutting elements and material feed systems. Methods for converting a rough cut shear to a fine particle shear and then to a granulator as well as a method for rejecting unprocessable material is also disclosed.

Abstract: The tire shredder includes a frame, a conveyor assembly depending from the frame defining a feed path for the tires and debris from an input end to a discharge end, a carriage supported with respect to the conveyor assembly to have a reciprocating linear travel across the linear feed path at the discharge end, and a plurality of rotary cutting elements mounted on the carriage with axes of rotation parallel to the travel of the carriage. By providing a plurality of rotary cutting elements tires coming in a wide variety of sizes can be handled. Abstract: An apparatus for reducing extra large vehicle tires to particles or to prepare them for recapping comprises a tire holder assembly, made up of a set of dual jacks, in combination with a rotary cutter blade assembly made up of a side-by-side series of discs carrying cutter blades of chisel type. The set of dual jacks are preferably carried by an arbor having opposite shaft ends adapted to matingly interconnect with corresponding ends of a motivating shaft for quick and easy interchange of one size tire holder assembly for another size. When the tire is to be recapped, arcuate attachments are secured to members of the tire holder assembly that contact a tire bead so as to preserve the circumferential integrity of such bead during cutting, and the cutter blade assembly is replaced by wire buffing brushes following removal of the tread portion of the tire by cutting. An optional feature of the invention is the freezing of the tire prior to cutting, so that steel reinforcing materials as well as the elastomeric material of the tire can be easily reduced to particles.

Abstract: Feeding structure for tire shredding apparatus comprises a set of studded rollers defining a feed mouth opening into a feed throat that leads into the tire shredding mechanism. Forwardly placed lower and upper rolls rotate at different speeds, the upper faster than the lower and preferably having its studs configured to provide sharp points for penetrating into the tire and positively advancing it rearwardly toward the shredding mechanism. An endless conveyor carries individual tires sequentially into the feed mouth flatwise and the throat preferably slopes downwardly to present each tire to, but tilted backwardly from, the shredding mechanism. The rolls are mounted in a protective cover for the shredding mechanism, which cover is pivoted, so as to rise and fall in accordance with tire thickness, and is mounted on shock absorbers and preferably in supplemental, pivot supporting brackets.

Abstract: An apparatus for cutting scrap tires and other waste products is disclosed. The apparatus includes a frame having a cylindrical anvil roll rotatably mounted therein. A blade roll is also mounted in the frame for rotation about an axis parallel to the rotational axis of the anvil roll, and a plurality of axially spaced roller blades of predetermined diameter are fixed to the blade roll and rotatable therewith. The blade roll is also provided with a pair of axially spaced thrust wheels, with the thrust wheels being positioned outboard of the blades and being equal to or slightly greater in diameter than the predetermined diameter of the blades. Driving means are provided in the apparatus for rotating the anvil roll and the blade roll in opposite directions in such a manner that scrap tires fed to the rolls will be drawn inwardly into the nip formed between the rolls and will be cut between the blades and the anvil. Biasing means are also provided for forcing the outer peripheries of the thrust wheels and the anvil roll into hard contact with one another to thereby maintain the spacing between the cutting surfaces of the blades and the outer surface of the anvil fixed notwithstanding the separating forces caused by the movement of a tire between such surfaces.
