Abstract:
A grinding machine has a base and a pair of work support bars journalled within the base. A table is journalled with the support bars in such fashion that it is axially movable along the parallel spaced bars and pivotable around one bar central axis while the other bar is radially displaced relative to the base. A pair of ramp surfaces having ramp planes disposed transversely to the pivot axis of the table are provided on the radially movable bar, such that a wedge feed is accomplished by relatively moving a powered wedging device along the ramp plane to thus radially move the movable bar, thereby causing table feed movement with respect to the base. A work support head stock is preferably carried on the base, and a wheelhead having a rotable grinding wheel is carried on the table, so that pivotal movement of the table causes relative feed movement of the grinding wheel with respect to a supported workpiece.
Abstract:
Apparatus for controlling infeed speed of a power screw feed system or the like for cutting and abrading materials in response to resistance sensed by the feed mechanism moving the material into contact with the machine tool.
Abstract:
A grinding machine having a movable workhead for carrying a workpiece and a movable wheelhead for carrying a grinding wheel, the workhead and the wheelhead being axially movable along intersecting paths. The wheelhead is provided with a lead screw drive in which the screw is fixed against rotation and the nut carried by the wheelhead platform is rotated by a gear drive but is fixed axially. This drive is used to provide micrometric movement. The screw terminates at one end in a piston in a hydraulic cylinder, this providing piston/cylinder drive for large amounts of wheelhead movement. Workhead feed is provided by a rotatable and axially displaceable spindle drive by a step-by-step electric motor through a gear train that converts the rotary motion output of the electric motion to corresponding axial movement of the spindle. .Iadd.

Abstract:
A device for indicating the touching of a grinding wheel and a workpiece. On a shaft connected to a spindle of a grinding wheel there is fixed a radially slotted or gear wheel. On the shaft there is also rotatably mounted another identical slotted wheel, which is connected by means of a spring to the shaft, and a stable supporting plate provided with magnetic scanning heads situated over the respective gear wheels. The thus mounted slotted wheels, which are made of magnetic metal, such as steel, the scanning heads, and the phase meter function to detect changes in speed of the grinding wheel. The outputs of the scanning heads are connected to a phase meter, the output of which, after being amplified, controls the in-feed speed of the grinding wheel.
Abstract:
A sliding unit for a grinding machine comprising a compact block table with parallel upper and lower faces and of a sufficiently small height to enable it to be placed on a base table of a grinding machine and carrying on its upper face an operating arrangement of the grinding machine and a slide drive mechanism positioned within said block table to cause said arrangement to carry out, under direct manual control or under indirect (manual or automatic) control, by means of an operator, all the functional movements of the grinding machine in the direction of slide of said slide mechanism. The drive mechanism includes a precision electric motor arrangement for controlling the coarse feed and plunge-cut transverse displacements of the grinding machine, a hydraulic arrangement for controlling the transverse displacements of engagement and disengagement of said grinding wheel, and a precision electric motor arrangement for controlling the transverse grinding wheel wear-take-up displacements.

A grinding machine comprising: a bed; a wheel slide slidably mounted on said bed; a grinding wheel rotatably mounted on said wheel slide; a work table for supporting a workpiece; feed means for moving said wheel slide toward and away from said workpiece; an electric power source; a first electrode mounted adjacent to said grinding wheel and connected to said electric power source for applying a potential to the surface of said grinding wheel; a second electrode mounted adjacent to said grinding wheel for detecting the change of the difference of potential caused by the approach of said grinding wheel to a workpiece in order to generate a control signal; an electrostatic screening member for encircling said second electrode except at the surface thereof opposed to said grinding wheel, said electrostatic screening member being connected to the ground; and control means for controlling said feed means so as to change the feed rate of said wheel slide in accordance with said control signal.
Abstract:
A grinding machine includes means for changing the feed rate of a grinding wheel relative to a workpiece when the grinding wheel approaches the workpiece. The grinding wheel is insulatedly mounted on a wheel slide which is moved by a feed device toward and away from the workpiece. An electrode device is mounted adjacent to the grinding wheel and is connected to an electric power source for generating a difference of potential between the grinding wheel and the workpiece. A detecting device detects the change of the difference of potential caused by the approach of the grinding wheel to the workpiece to generate a control signal. A control device controls the feed device so as to change the feed rate of the wheel slide in accordance with the control signal.

Abstract:
Improved dual-cycle camshaft grinding machine, method of operation thereof, and improved wheel feed control sub-assembly therefor with a grinding wheel feed driven by an electrohydraulic pulse motor regulated by open loop numerical control. Solid state machine logic regulates the initiation of open loop wheel feeding steps and controls related machine functions. Hand control for purposes of calibration setup is accomplished through the automatic controls eliminating the redundant handwheel and like manual controls of the art.
