Abstract:
Multiphase Cutting may comprise a bulk removal pass followed by a fine removal pass to cut a gemstone. For example, multiphase cutting may perform a removal by removing approximately 90% of material during a first pass and then reset and remove the remaining 10% of material during a second pass. The second pass may use a slower feed rate and a wider oscillation, moving the gemstone across an entire range of a lap wheel. This split setup may thus produce significantly more accurate results for the accuracy of the total removal.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to an apparatus for grinding or polishing at least one edge of a glass substrate. The apparatus includes a grinding unit configured to remove a predetermined amount of material from the edge when in an aligned position. The grinding unit applies a predetermined force normal to the edge. An air bearing slide system is coupled to the grinding unit. The air bearing slide system is configured to slide along a predetermined axis on a thin film of pressurized air that provides a zero friction load bearing interface. A linear actuation motor is coupled to the air bearing slide system. The linear actuation motor is configured to control the movement of the air bearing slide system such that the grinding unit is moved from a non-aligned position to the aligned position.
Abstract:
The feed system for a honing machine provides a capability to dynamically correct in real time errors in bore size inferred arising from variations in feed force, and a method of operation of the same. The system allows a user to select between rate and force controlled honing modes, which provides one or more of the advantages of both modes. The system provides capabilities for automatic rapid automatic bore wall detection, compensation for elasticity of elements of the feed system and honing tool, and automatic tool protection. The system is automatically operable using feed force, feed rate and positional information for honing a work piece to one or more target parameters, such as one or more in-process sizes and a final size.

Abstract:
A process of grinding a surface of a workpiece, by a grinding tool rotated about its axis. The process includes a grinding step of grinding the workpiece surface, by pressing at least one of the grinding tool and the workpiece against the other of the grinding tool and the workpiece, such that a constant force is exerted on the other of the grinding tool and the workpiece by the at least one of the grinding tool and the workpiece. Also disclosed is a grinding apparatus including: a moving device operable to move at least one of the grinding tool and the workpiece relative to the other of the grinding tool and the workpiece, at least in an infeed direction that increases a depth of cut of the grinding tool into the workpiece; and a controller which controls the moving device, such that the at least one of the grinding tool and the workpiece is pressed against the other of the grinding tool and the workpiece, with a constant force.
Abstract:
A rotary grinding machine includes a rotary grinding member for grinding a workpiece on a workpiece feeding member. The grinding member is coupled with an output shaft of a motor through a drive transmission mechanism. The feeding member is coupled with the output shaft of the motor through a reduction gear mechanism, a transmission shaft and an endless tensible transmission member. To maintain an operating tension of the tensible transmission member when the feeding member is moved relative to the grinding member, a tensioning mechanism is disposed to enable effective transmission of a drive force from the reduction gear mechanism to the feeding member.
Abstract:
A grinding machine for grinding an inner race of a constant velocity joint, which contains a grinding wheel with a concentric peripheral surface of boron nitride, and a device for rotating the grinding wheel at a speed of at least about 5,000 revolutions per minute. The machine also has a lubricating fluid injection system for lubricating the inner race and grinding bit. The machine also contains devices for moving the inner race in the X axis, in the Z axis, and simultaneously in the X and Z axes.
Abstract:
A pneumatic mechanism for the application of uniform pressure to a mechanically adjustable spindle. The mechanism includes a support shelf with a double-acting piston attached at its non-pressure end to the support shaft. A cylinder receives the piston for telescopingly sliding movement of the piston relative to the cylinder. A lifting stop rod is connected to the pressure end of the piston and an externally threaded tube engages the pressure end of the piston and telescopingly receives the lifting stop rod. A worm wheel engages the threaded tube and a worm gear engages the worm wheel. A hand wheel is connected to the worm gear for rotating the worm gear and the worm wheel. An adjustable connection is provided between the lifting stop rod and the threaded tube permitting limited stop movement of the lifting stop rod by the piston relative to the threaded tube. Air ports for directing pressurized air against the bottom end of the piston to lift the piston and the lifting stop rod relative to the threaded tube and against the upper end of the piston to return the piston to its lowered position are provided in the cylinder.
Abstract:
A surface grinder includes a bed or base, a table supported on the bed for reciprocating movement and a grinding wheel supported on a vertical column. An actuator connected to the table reciprocates the table relative to the grinding wheel. A programmable control system is operatively connected to the actuator to move the table from a home position to a feed or ramp-in position through a cutting motion, through a wipe cycle or spark out motion and to return the table to the home position. The part to be ground is held on the table by a magnetic chuck. The control system includes a manually operable teach input device which permits the operator to program the control system to set the table motion while manually moving the table through a grinding cycle. The control system provides accurate bidirectional control over the motion of the table. The operator may independently vary the speed of the table between its movement between various positions during programming.
Abstract:
The arrangement enables controlling the speed of advance of the tool part of a machine tool during its approach phase toward a workpiece and reducing such speed as soon as the tool contacts the workpiece. It includes an acoustic sensor adapted to detect the signal emitted at the instant of contact, an electronic circuit for processing such signal and a motor responding to the circuit to regulate the speed of advance of the tool part. The sensor is fastened to a feeler mounted on the machine framework by means of shock absorbers, said feeler being arranged to be in contact with the workpiece or its carrier.
