Abstract: A machine is disclosed for erecting cases stored in upright, flattened positions in storage magazines. The machine includes means for extracting end member cases from the magazines, for dropping the extracted cases into drop chutes, for urging the cases in a generally horizontal direction out of the drop chutes, for opening the flattened cases by spreading the case sides apart, for tucking in lower case end flaps, for folding one case bottom panel in under the tucked end flaps, for applying adhesive to the bottom surface of the folded bottom panel, for folding another bottom panel in under the bottom panel having adhesive thereon, and for compressing the two bottom panels together.

Abstract: A topper unit is disclosed which may be utilized for opening, applying and locking a pre-glued open ended carton to the top of a bottle which is being progressively moved through the machine employing the topper unit. The topper unit may be used either singly, doubly, or in greater multiples in a packaging machine and comprises a hopper for receiving the pre-glued and folded cartons. Located below the hopper are means for removing the cartons one at a time from the hopper while opening the cartons so that they can later be applied to the top of the bottle. When the cartons have been opened one at a time, they are then pressed onto the bottle while they are squared up and are then ultimately locked onto the bottle. Also disclosed is a new and novel method for withdrawing a pre-glued open ended folded carton from a hopper and opening the carton and applying it to the top of a bottle or a plurality of moving bottles.

Abstract: An apparatus (10) for erecting collapsed, tubular cartons (12) is disclosed including a device (32) for removing the top carton (12) of a vertical stack of cartons (12) in a hopper (26) and moving it in a horizontal orientation to an operative position. In the operative position, the second side panel (16) of the collapsed carton (12) underlies at least the first end panel (18) which is in a linear arrangement with the first side panel (14). Suction cups (76) carried by a frame (74) are secured to the second side panel (16) in an attachment position and moved by a parallelogram linkage to an open position located vertically below and coinciding with the first side panel (14). The bottom closure flap (23) is folded upwardly by a bending rod (82) as the frame (74) moves the carton (12) to its open condition. After an unload arm (84) is secured to the first end panel (18), tucking arms ( 102, 104, 106) are pivoted to tuck the remaining bottom closure flaps (22, 24, 25), with the last tucking arm (106) carrying a taping machine (114) to apply a tape piece (116) to the carton (12). The unload arm (84) is then pivoted about a first axis from the pickup position to a drop position and is simultaneously pivoted about a second axis from a first condition to a second condition to place the erected carton (12) in a chute (118) at an offset location and in a horizontal orientation. In the most preferred form, the unload arm (84) is pivoted about the second axis by a crank arm (98) secured to the unload arm (84) and a connector (100) having its opposite end secured to a stationary reference point when the unload arm (84) is pivoted about the first axis.

Abstract: A blank feeder is used for feeding blanks to a bottom forming mandrel. The blanks are initially in a flat form and are unfoldable to a form of square cross section. The feeder includes a magazine for the flat blanks, and a transport arrangement having a path of transport extending from the delivery opening along a circular arc having a central axis parallel to the widthwise direction of the blank in the delivery opening. The transport arrangement includes a suction member, a transport arm carrying the suction member on a forward end, and a shaft rotatably supporting the transport arm and having an axis aligned with a central axis of the circular arc. The suction member has suction cups at different distances from the central axis for gripping one side of the blank, so that the blank is unfolded by movement of the suction member along the circular arc causing a greater separation of a gripped side of the blank at the furthest end of the blank from the central axis than at the nearest end of the blank. An unfolding arrangement is also provided, for unfolding each blank while the blank is being transported, the unfolding arrangement having first and second blank unfolding claws at edge portions of the delivery opening so as to individually engage with opposite ends of the blank in the delivery opening.

Abstract: An improvement in an apparatus for setting up and closing the bottom of cartons or so called slit-boxes which are supplied as plainly collapsed carton tubes having sides and bottom and top flaps which are integral with the sides. The apparatus comprises a support (1) which carries a magazine (2) for carton blanks, a feeder unit (3) and a bottom flap closing means (4). The feeding unit (3) includes a suction catcher (11) adapted to catch and open a container blank and to move the said blank along a handling path while closing at least bottom thereof. The feeding unit carries an expelling means (27) having an expellor arm (28) which is moveable between a position inside the handling path and a position outside the handling path and which is mounted at a predetermined distance in front of the feeder unit (3) as considered in the feeding direction. The expellor arm (28) is actuated by a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder (31) to move to a position inside the handling path when the suction catcher (11) starts to move along the handling path after having pulled a carton blank (6) out of the magazine (2) and to move the expellor arm (28) out of the handling path after the suction catcher with the expellor arm (28) and the set up carton has reached a predetermined end position and just before the suction catcher (11) starts to return to its initial position in contact with the foremost carton blank (6) of the magazine.

Abstract: The specification describes a cartoning apparatus adapted to carry out a plurality of cartoning steps which in the past have been carried out by individual independent machines. The cartoning apparatus includes a set-up station for the opening of flat carton blanks, a conveyor for advancing the opened carton blanks along the apparatus, and closure means downstream of the set-up station for closing the bottom and/or top of the carton. Abstract: Carton feeding and erecting apparatus for transferring flattened cartons from one location to another while simultaneously unfolding the cartons to an erect, or partially erect, condition. Abstract: A preferred embodiment of the invention comprises a box forming machine operable to raise folded box material to a box frame, and to fold the edges that comprise the box bottom into a bottom area and to tape the folded edges. The forming equipment is equipped with a box material supply that stores folded box stock material. Abstract: A carton erector apparatus for setting up foldable carton blanks. The apparatus includes a carton blank storage section, a carton blank setup section and a bottom flap folding section. The carton setup section includes a carton opening assembly comprising a pivot arm assembly pivotally secured to a folding arm assembly. The pivot arm assembly is movable between first and second positions respectively parallel and perpendicular to the folding arm assembly. A first grasping device is secured to the pivot arm assembly to grasp a side panel of the forward carton in the carton blank storage section such that movement of the pivot arm assembly and the folding arm assembly into their second positions is effective to set up the carton blank into a tubular form. A second grasping device grasps an end panel of the setup carton and a third grasping device grasps the other side panel of the setup carton. Bottom flap folding assemblies are provided to infold the bottom flaps of the setup carton.
