摘要: A method of calibrating a ribbon winding mechanism of a printing apparatus which is adapted to perform a printing operation in which at a printing station a print head is moved relative to a first length of the ribbon to transfer print medium from the first length of the ribbon onto a substrate and the ribbon is subsequently advanced a predetermined amount to present a second length of ribbon at the printing station for use in a further printing operation, the winding mechanism comprising a supply spool and a take-up spool and there being a ribbon path between the supply and take-up spool through the printing station, and a motive means to cause the ribbon to be moved along the ribbon feed path and wound onto the take-up spool, and a sensing means to sense movement of the ribbon as the take-up spool is rotated and to provide a signal to a control means in response, the method being characterized in that prior to performing the printing operation, the take-up spool is rotated a predetermined amount whilst the sending means senses the resultant ribbon movement along the ribbon feed path and the control means determines from the signal received from the sensing means the amount to rotate the take-up spool in the subsequent printing operation to advance the ribbon the predetermined amount.

摘要: An imprinting mechanism has a frame delineating a printing station. A printing carriage including a printer is reciprocatably carried by the frame. A drive is interposed between the carriage and the station for causing selective relative movement between the carriage and the station in printing and return directions. Spaced web supply and take-up mechanisms delineate the ends of a printing web path of travel from the supply past the station and the carriage to the take-up. A web brake is provided which has an on position preventing relative web and carriage movement when the carriage and station relatively moved in the return direction and an off position permitting tape and carriage movement when the carriage and station are relatively moved in the printing direction and the printer is printing.

摘要: This disclosure sets forth a dot matrix printer having an improved ribbon drive. The ribbon drive is provided by two respective stepper motors. When one stepper motor is in a take-up mode, the second is in a feed mode. The process is reversed proximate the end of the tape as it is unwound. A re-generative mode for the feed motor is provided and a resistance bank varies amounts of drag on the ribbon as it is fed from the feed motor spool. Both motors when in the take-up mode are driven by full H bridge drivers and amplifiers controlled by a micro controller through an address and decode input and output latch. In order to provide for a uniform velocity of the print ribbon the angular velocity of the take up motor is controlled by counting the zero crossings of the feed motor, and then loading it into the micro controller to compare it with a look-up table for purposes of providing a proper speed to the take-up motor and the proper peak drag through the resistance bank to the feed motor. All functions are controlled by the micro controller and firmware logic provided thereto.

摘要: A single stepping motor 10 driven to effect ribbon feed, ribbon lift, correction tape feed, correction tape lift is disclosed. The stepping motor 10 controls a cam 60/follower 64 pair to effect lift through a connection link 54 to a depending coupling 56 on the ribbon cartridge 22. The link 54 provides accurate positioning of the ribbon cartridge 22 without regard to the cam position and further transmits ribbon feed motion through to the depending coupling to the ribbon driver 30. Correction tape feed is effected through link 54 controlling the oscillation of the cartridges 22, 24 relative to a tape feed cam member 44.

摘要: Drive and control apparatus utlizing a pair of gear motors alternating as drive and drag means for the ribbon wherein the drive motor has full voltage applied thereto for driving the ribbon, and the drag motor has reduced voltage applied for maintaining tension on the ribbon. The direction of drive is caused to be reversed by switching bars over which the ribbon travels, the bars being poles of a switch connected to the printer circuitry. The apparatus includes skew means to move the ribbon toward one or the other end of the spools and wherein a skew arm is swingably driven against either an upper or a lower stop by separate drive means caused to be actuated by ribbon sensing means at one end of the ribbon spools.

摘要: There is provided a tape drive. The tape drive comprises first and second spool supports on which spools of tape may be mounted. The tape drive further comprises an optical sensing system. The optical sensing system comprises a radiation emitter and a radiation detector, said radiation emitter and radiation detector having a fixed positional relationship in use with respect to said first and second spool supports. The tape drive further comprises a controller. The controller is operative to, energise the radiation emitter to emit radiation, and determine a diameter data indicative of a diameter of a spool mounted on one of the first and second spool supports based on a radiation signal generated by the detector.

摘要: A method of operating a thermal transfer printer, the thermal transfer printer comprising first and second spool supports each being configured to support a spool of ribbon; a ribbon drive configured to cause movement of ribbon from the first spool support to the second spool support along a predetermined ribbon path; and a printhead. The printhead is moveable towards and away from a printing surface, and, during printing, is configured to selectively transfer ink from the ribbon to a substrate as the substrate and printhead are moved relative to one another at a print speed. The method comprising causing relative movement between the ribbon and the printhead at a ribbon speed. A relative speed of movement between the ribbon and the substrate during printing is controlled based upon a force exerted upon the ribbon by the printhead during a printing operation, and/or a parameter indicative of an area of contact between a portion of the printhead and a portion of the printing surface.
