    Abstract: A wheel assembly includes a rigid wheel and an airless tire. The wheel includes a cylindrical rim portion that is parallel with an axis of rotation of the wheel and includes a transversely flat outer surface corresponding to at least eighty percent of the total width of the rim portion. The tire is mounted on the rim portion of the wheel and includes a cylindrical tire body presenting a transversely flat inner surface that engages the outer surface of the wheel. A plurality of traction lugs are spaced circumferentially around the tire and extend radially outwardly from the tire body. A plurality of drive lugs are spaced circumferentially around the tire, extend radially inwardly from the tire body and engage corresponding receptacles on the rim portion of the wheel.

    Abstract: Tire blocks are described. The techniques described herein may enable multiple blocks of foam to substantially fill an inside of a tire. Each of the blocks used to fill a tire may have a wedge shape and a rigidity that is sufficient to operate the tire without air pressure. The wedge shape of each of the tire blocks has sides that may be positioned at least partially against sidewalls of the tire and sides that may be positioned against other blocks of foam. The tire can then be inflated to the desired air pressure for operation. Because of the density of the foam and the wedge shape design, a failed tire can still be used for normal operation.

    Abstract: A non-pneumatic tire for supporting a load by working in tension comprising a generally annular inner ring, a generally annular outer ring, and an interconnected web having a plurality of web elements and comprising a plurality of generally polygonal openings. Web elements are sized, curved, oriented, and comprised of varying thicknesses of material which facilitates buckling when subjected to a compressive load. By buckling, those elements in a deformed portion of the tire between a wheel and a footprint region where the tire contacts a surface can assume a significantly reduced portion of the load, if any. This causes web elements in other portions of the interconnected web to operate in tension to support the load.
