The inner conductor is configured so as to form the boundaries of two chambers and configured to form a third chamber between the outer hollow conductor and an inner conductor. The three chambers are of substantially equal cross-sectional size whereby even gas flow is proudced and even consumption of the electrode is provided.

The contact wire (30) for a roller seam welding machine is provided on its front face with grooves (32) which are formed in the longitudinal direction of the wire and which are bounded by sharp longitudinal edges (34). The contact wire (30) is particularly well suited for welding metal sheets, the surfaces of which are heavily soiled or provided with coatings which are poor electrical conductors or electrically non-conducting. During the welding operation, the longitudinal edges (34) cut open the sheets to be welded or their oxide layer or coating which is a poor electrical conductor or non-conducting, and render possible a direct passage of the welding current to the actual metal sheet. Dirt as well as semi-plastic and vaporized coating material are reliably carried away to the front and rear in the longitudinal grooves so that the contact wire (30) cannot "float" during the welding operation. A preferred application for the contact wire (30) is the welding of fuel tanks from sheets which are coated so as to be poor electrical conductors or non-conducting on both sides, on a resistance roller seam welding machine.

A method of manufacturing nonconsumable copper-zirconium electrodes in two stages. First, an intermediate layer of cold-deformed copper of a thickness substantially equal to the diameter of a zirconium core is cold deformed on the core. Second, a copper sleeve of an external diameter 5 to 15 times greater than the diameter of the core is hot deformed on to the first structure. Using this method ensures proper circular shape of the core in cross-section, reliability of the bond between the core and sleeve for operation of the electrode at temperatures in excess of 1000.degree. C and at cooling water pressures as high as 10 atmospheres, high thermal and electric conductivity across the copper-zirconium interface, as well as fine technological effectiveness of the process to the conditions of large-scale production.

There is disclosed an arc welding process for stainless steel and a flux-cored electrode particularly useful therein. In one embodiment, means are provided for limiting the moisture content of the electrode as applied to the workpiece. In another embodiment the electrode is formulated of components having relatively low moisture absorptivity.
