An improved tungsten inert gas-shielded non-consumable composite welding electrode having a solid tungsten rod center (12) and a concentric outer sleeve (14) substantially lower in electrical resistivity than the tungsten rod, bonded adhesively and cohesively to the tungsten by flame spraying so that the surface irregularities of the mating surface areas of the tungsten and outer sleeve mechanically interlock. The improvement is provided by coating the outer sleeve onto the tungsten center and adhesively and cohesively bonding the interface of the surface area of contact to maintain a minimum resistance electric coupling at welding operating temperatures.

The electrode comprises a low-carbon manganese steel core wire having a carbon content of less than 0.1% by mass, and a manganese content of 0.35-0.60% by mass. The electrode has a basic chromium alloyed flux coating, which upon welding, deposits a low-carbon chromium martensitic ferritic weld metal comprising about 90% by mass low carbon martensite and about 10% by mass ferrite and having a carbon content of less than 0.04% by mass.

A tubular composite self-shielded arc welding electrode comprising a metallic outer sheath and a core within and enclosed by the sheath, the core comprising about 15 percent to about 60 percent of the electrode weight and consisting essentially of the following listed components in the specified weight percentages of the electrode: from about 1 percent to about 7 percent of at least one slag former, from about 0.5 percent to about 6 percent of at least one fluxing agent, up to about 3.2 percent of at least one arc stabilizer selected from the group consisting of calcium titanate, potassium titanate, potassium-bearing frit, sodium titanate and sodium-bearing frit, from 1.25 percent to about 4 percent of deoxidizer metal including at least 1 percent manganese and at least 0.25 percent silicon, and from about 12 percent to about 55 percent of other metal-bearing materials selected from the group consisting of metals, metal alloys and ferroalloys, the electrode being formulated to produce a highalloy deposit of a type selected from austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steels and nickel-base alloys. In a preferred form the electrode may contain up to about 3 percent by weight of at least one fissure-reducing agent selected from the group consisting of alloyed and unalloyed metallic forms of calcium, magnesium and titanium.

Coredtype arc-welding steel electrode particularly intended for out-of-position welding wherein the ingredients in the core provide a pinch-effect type metal transfer at relatively low arc currents as well as a viscous slag which prevents the molten metal in the weld pool from being pulled out of the weld pool by the force of gravity. The ingredients making up the core provide a CaF2 metallic oxide slag system which provides a shielding action to the arc, plus as an essential ingredient(s), a compound of barium or strontium or both.
