A wet process for compounding polymers which comprises forming a paste consisting of solid ingredients such as oxidizers and metal powder, a rubber polymer and low boiling hydrocarbon; extruding said paste through a plastic or metal tube provided with a multiperforated nozzle and a plastic plunger whereby strands are formed; and dropping said strands through a current of warm air or warm inert gas whereby said strands are dry to the touch as they fall to the bottom of said cylinder. This process provides compositions which are homogeneous and the solid ingredients are retained within the polymer-solid composition.

A method of forming a shaped, propellant charge having a sponge-like cellular structure which comprises incorporating in a colloided nitrocellulose composition a solvent for an inert gas, placing the said composition in a suitable mold, subjecting said composition to an atmosphere of inert gas at elevated pressures and to heat not exceeding 65*C, and then releasing the gaseous pressure whereby the explosive composition is expanded to form a unitary, spongy structure substantially in the form of the mold.

AMMONIUM NITRATE PRILLS ACTIVATED BY ADDING A SMALL AMOUNT OF WATER TO THE PRILLS, THOROUGHLY MIXING THE WATER SO THAT IT IS ALL ABSORBED, HEATING THE PRILLS TO AN ELEVATED TEMPERATURE, EVAPORTING THE WATER FROM THE PRILLS, AND THEN PREFERABLY COOLING THE PRILLS. AN ECONOMICAL AND EFFECTIVE EXPLOSIVE COMPOSITION IS MANUFACTURED BY COMBINING APPROPRIATE PROPORTIONS OF THE ACTIVATED AMMONIUM NITRATE PRILLS, A FUEL AND PREFERABLY A SENSITIZER. THE PREFERRED FUEL IS A LIQUID HYDROCARBON DERIVATIVE WHICH IS SOLUBLE IN THE SENSITIZER AND WHICH HAS A FUEL VALUE GREATER THAN THAT OF THE SENSITIZER. THE PREFERRED SENSITIZERS ARE NITROALKANE, OR DINITROAROMATIC COMPOUNDS MOST PREFERABLY NITROMETHANE.

An improved storage container is disclosed for the safe storage of materials such as sensitive explosives and pyrotechnic mixtures. The container is fluid tight with a removable cover and an internal support means in which the sensitive material is held while immersed in a desensitizing liquid. Gauging means are provided for monitoring the level of the desensitizing liquid and filling and pressure control means are included for maintaining the liquid level and for preventing a pressure build-up within the container as well as for providing for a controlled pressure release during storage or when the container is to be opened. The invention described herein may be manufactured used and licensed by or for the Government for Governmental purposes without the payment to us of any royalties thereon.

An improved extrudable, high energy solid propellant composition consisting essentially of the copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and perfluoropropylene (Viton), an inorganic oxidizer such as ammonium perchlorate, potassium perchlorate or ammonium nitrate, and a metal powder such as aluminum, beryllium, magnesium or zirconium. This composition is extrudable into any suitable shape and has a very high percentage theoretical maximum density so as to be practical for utilization in rocket motors for propulsion.

THE PRESENT DISCLOSURE RELATES TO A PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR THE GRANULATION OF MATERIALS, FOR EXAMPLE SUSPENSIONS OF EXPLOSIVES, WHEREIN SAID MATERIALS ARE INTRODUCED INTO A GRANULATING VESSEL ONTO THE SURFACE OF A ROTATING DISK WHICH FLINGS THE MATERIALS AGAINST THE WALLS OF SAID GRANULATING VESSEL. ADVANTAGEOUSLY, WATER OR ANOTHER SUITABLE LIQUID IS ALSO INTRODUCED ONTO THE SURFACE OF THE ROTATING DISK AND IS LIKEWISE FLUNG AGAINST THE WALL OF THE GRANULATING VESSEL TOGETHER WITH THE MATERIALS TO BE GRANULATING. THE ADDITION OF A FLUID SUCH AS WATER DURING THE PROCESS PROVIDES A MAXIMUM DEGREE OF SAFETY DURING THE OPERATION.
