The winder shaft for a sewing machine, fashioned as a support for a thread bobbin, is positioned directly on the shaft of a low-voltage motor, independent of the drive motor for the sewing mechanism of the sewing machine. An on/off switch for this motor is operable by means of a three-armed switching lever, with the first arm being adapted to scan the package of wound thread forming on the bobbin. A trigger cam disposed on the third arm slides, during this operation, over a first surface of a spring-biased dual ramp. Once the thread bobbin is full, the trigger cam surpasses the apex of the dual ramp, and the switching lever flips into a disconnect position and cuts off the motor by way of a switching cam disposed on the second arm. All of the elements of the spooling device are mounted to a common support so that the spooling device, which is independent of the drive mechanism of the sewing machine, can be attached as a composite unit at any desired location on the sewing machine.

A thread engageable finger for guiding needle thread into a thread receiving slot on the bobbin case of a sewing machine, as a seized loop of the thread is moved about the bobbin case by a looptaker, is provided along a thread engaging edge with a predetermined curved contour effective to delay movement of the thread along said edge until the introduction of thread into the bobbin case slot as required for bobbin winding is assured.

Thread-loading apparatus for loading a bobbin spool with a predetermined length of thread between sewing operations wherein there is a reciprocal loading tube arranged to receive and draw thread from a package of thread, deliver its leading end to the bobbin and project it onto the bobbin while the latter is being rotated at a high speed so as to be caught thereby and wound onto the bobbin; a slack-producing device for drawing a slack length of thread from the package of thread preparatory to a loading operation to thus eliminate the inertial resistance of the package of thread to giving up thread; a precisely-controlled thread measuring device employed to control the length of thread delivered to the bobbin; and a bobbin having peripherally-spaced flexible fingers on its hub for entraining the leading end of the thread delivered to the bobbin. The apparatus, in one form, comprises a loading tube which is arcuately reciprocal toward and from the loading position and, in another, a loading tube which is rectilinearly reciprocal toward and from the loading position.

In a lockstitch sewing machine, a bobbin thread replenishing mechanism for selectively rotating the bobbin to wind replenishment thread thereon from a needle by means of a spindle selectively engaging the bobbin for rotating the bobbin with the machine looptaker wherein a slip clutch provided with an elongated slot is positioned around a flattened end portion of the spindle generally within a central aperture of a bobbin thread control cam. The slip clutch has an enlarged lower flange which rests on the looptaker base and rubs against the thread control cam so that by this arrangement the spindle will be driven with the looptaker by way of friction coupling of the slip clutch between the looptaker and the thread control cam. Should sufficient resistance of the turning of the spindle arise, the looptaker and thread control cam turn freely relative the slip clutch thereby preventing overwinding of the bobbin.

The disclosure is directed to automatic bobbin rewinding for sewing machines. A two-station mechanism is provided enabling bobbins to be transferred from a winding position to a sewing position, with one bobbin being at all times in each position. When a bobbin is exhausted, that bobbin and its case are removed from the sewing machine and, simultaneously, a filled bobbin is removed from the winding position and combined with its case. The bobbin positions are then reversed, enabling the filled bobbin and its case to be inserted in the sewing machine, while the just-removed bobbin is separated from its case and inserted in the winding position. The filled bobbin remains attached to the main thread supply until it is inserted in the sewing position, enabling the thread to be guided and controlled until picked up by the sewing mechanism, thus avoiding the need for manual intervention. With the old bobbin in the rewind position, the remaining, unused thread is first extracted from it, and then the thread supply is guided into engagement with the empty bobbin in preparation for rewinding. The rewinding operation is carried out while the filled bobbin is being used in the sewing operation, so that there is continuity of operation of the sewing machine.

The winding mechanism is used with sewing machines of the type having a fixedly positioned winder shaft with a bobbin-receiving pin protruding from the machine casing, and a friction wheel for driving the winder shaft and having a friction wheel shaft separated from the winder shaft but operatively connected with the winder shaft and engageable with the driving wheel of the machine to selectively operate the winding mechanism. The inner end of the winder shaft has fixed thereto a disk with a slot extending diametrically thereof, and an end of the friction wheel shaft carries a cooperating disk having a pin or lug engageable in the slot. The friction wheel is mounted on a carrier which is spring biased to an operating position and a rest position. The driving connection between the two shafts is maintained at all times within the range of displacement of the friction wheel shaft between the operating and rest positions.

A LOCKSTITCH SEWING MACHINE HAVING AN OSCILLATING LOOP TAKER IS PROVIDED WITH A MECHANISM FOR REPLENISHING THREAD ON THE BOBBIN WHILE THE BOBBIN IS IN PLACE IN THE LOOP TAKER AND WHILE THE LOOP TAKER PARTAKES OF THE SAME OSCILLATORY MOVEMENT AS DURING STITCH FORMATION. MEANS ARE DISCLOSED FOR INTRODUCING THREAD TO THE BOBBIN IN PLACE ON THE LOOP TAKER, AND A RATCHET DEVICE IS DRIVEN BY THE OSCILLATING LOOP TAKER DRIVER FOR TURNING THE BOBBIN IN ONLY ONE DIRECTION TO WIND THE THREAD THEREON.

A system for adjusting the tensile stress to which the upper thread of the machine is subjected by means of a spring engaging an arrangement including a spindle carrying two plates between which the thread is held against friction during its progression from its spool towards the needle. The adjustment of the spring is ensured by means of two levers connecting corresponding points of the spring respectively with the spindle of said arrangement and with the cam normally controlling the actual tensioning of the spring.
