    Abstract: A method of designing a drill bit is disclosed. The method includes determining a location of a bit coordinate system in a wellbore coordinate system and generating a bit profile based on an angular coordinate around a wellbore axis of a wellbore and the location of the bit coordinate system. The bit profile is based on a cutting edge of a first cutting element on an exterior portion of a first blade. The method also includes determining a cutting layer volume based on the bit profile and identifying a weak zone based on the cutting layer volume being less than a predefined minimum cutting layer volume. The method includes determining a location for a second cutting element on the exterior portion of a second blade based on the weak zone.

    Abstract: A drill bit for directional drilling includes a main body and a wear component. The main body is unitary and formed of a first material. The main body includes opposed outer surfaces and a periphery extending between the opposed surfaces. The wear component is unitary and is formed of a second material that is harder than the first material. The wear component comprises a retention portion and a wear portion. The retention portion is positioned within the first material of the main body. The retention portion includes opposed retention surfaces that, moving in a direction inward from the periphery of the main body, taper apart from each other toward the opposed outer surfaces of the main body. The wear portion extends outward from the retention portion relative to the periphery of the main body. The wear portion is substantially planar and is configured to form an outer wear edge.

    Abstract: A downhole tool includes a fastening assembly securing one component to another component. The fastening assembly may include a threaded fastener located in an aperture of one component and a locking mechanism located in a cavity proximate the aperture. The threaded fastener may include a flange including mutually spaced holes located circumferentially within an outer periphery of the flange. The locking mechanism may include a spring and a dowel member. The locking mechanism may be positioned within a hole of the flange and may be configured to retain the threaded fastener in a fixed position relative to one component. Methods include using a depressor ring including teeth corresponding to the holes of the flange to depress the locking mechanism into the cavity while tightening the threaded fastener.

    Abstract: Partially formed earth-boring rotary drill bits comprise a first less than fully sintered particle-matrix component having at least one recess, and at least a second less than fully sintered particle-matrix component disposed at least partially within the at least one recess. Each less than fully sintered particle-matrix component comprises a green or brown structure including compacted hard particles, particles comprising a metal alloy matrix material, and an organic binder material. The at least a second less than fully sintered particle-matrix component is configured to shrink at a slower rate than the first less than fully sintered particle-matrix component due to removal of organic binder material from the less than fully sintered particle-matrix components in a sintering process to be used to sinterbond the first less than fully sintered particle-matrix component to the at least a second less than fully sintered particle-matrix component. Earth-boring rotary drill bits comprise such components sinterbonded together.
