Abstract: An electrical device is disclosed which is small in size and easily assembled. The device employs a rotatable housing and a grooved geometrically programmed disc to locate a ball contact at a desired position on a substrate. The substrate may comprise a resistor, spaced contacts or other conductive surface, and the movable ball contact may change circuit conditions incrementally when compared with the degree of movement of the drive for the ball. The ball has two points of contact with the grooved disc reducing noise and wear. The grooved disc is readily replaceable for changing the operating characteristics of the device.

Abstract: A slide rheostat having a light-emitting device for permitting a person to check the position of the knob of the rheostat in the nighttime or in the dark. The rheostat includes a transparent upper baseplate, a transparent lower baseplate, a laminated sheet including a pressure-sensitive contact member, a transparent sliding body that reciprocates, the knob being formed on the sliding body, an indicator portion having a transparent region, and a pressure-applying member. The light-emitting device is disposed below the lower baseplate rather than on the knob carried by the sliding body. When the light-emitting device is lit, the emitted light is transmitted through the lower baseplate, the laminated sheet, the upper baseplate, and the transparent region of the indicator portion that has a scale thereon. Part of the light directly reaches the outside through this transparent region, while the other part arrives at the outside after passing through the knob.

Abstract: A sealed position transducer which is self-wiping and which is readily adaptable for providing both linear and nonlinear electrical outputs. The transducer includes a housing, a resistive element received in the housing, and a flexible membrane, having a conductive portion formed thereon facing the resistive element, disposed over the resistive element and attached to the housing to seal the interior of the housing from the environment. An object whose position is to be sensed or measured is mounted on or connected to a carriage which movably engages a guide track formed as part of the housing. The carriage includes a roller which causes the conductive portion of the membrane to be deflected into contact with a portion of the resistive element.In one embodiment, where a linear relationship between resistance and distance is desired, a resistive element having a known, constant resistance per unit length is used. By measuring the resistance between the point of contact of the membrane and the resistive element, the distance of the roller from one end of the resistive element is readily determined. Where a nonlinear relationship is desired, a pressure contact clip is used to compress the conductive portion of the flexible membrane into contact with a selected portion of the resistive element.

Abstract: A variable resistance controller for electrical braking systems and the like wherein the form on which the resistance wire is wound has spaced apart flats into which some of the coils are drawn during winding. This arrangement provides alternate lands and depressions over which a leaf spring type contact rolls. The preferred arrangement has only two coils per land to give increased contact pressure of the leaf spring therewith and to provide predetermined incremental increases in electrical output as the leaf spring rolls from one land to the other. In the preferred embodiment, the spacing of the lands is arranged so that the electrical output is proportional to the hydraulic actuating pressure.The preferred embodiment also includes a diode connected between the output of the controller and ground through a fusible link to permit the collapsing magnetic field of the controlled braking electromagnets to draw current through the diode on deactuation of the unit to bypass the wound resistor. This reduces arcing and increases service life.

Abstract: A D.C. potential controller is provided for controlling the magnitude and polarity of a D.C. potential applied to a D.C. drive motor. The controller includes a supply device for producing a potential having a predetermined polarity and magnitude and including a first fixed terminal referenced to said predetermined polarity and potential and a second fixed terminal referenced to a reference potential.
