Here, the origin return angle is an angle obtained by adding a backlash angle, a predetermined positive pre-offset angle, and a positive placing error correction angle set based on a placing error of the indicating-needle with respect to the stopper.

Each of the light guides are formed from a clear material providing visibility through each of the light guides. A corresponding plurality of lights selectively illuminates each of the plurality of cantilevered light guides. An etched surface is formed on the surface of each of the cantilevered light guides in the shape of a numeral or symbol. The illumination of the etched area on the clear cantilevered light guide creates the appearance that the symbols or numerals are floating proximate the main gauge and thereby generate desired aesthetic features while communicating information to a vehicle operator.

A first motor mounted to a printed circuit board is used to rotate the laser in a first plane, and a second motor is used to rotate the laser in a second plane. The laser may reside in a housing having a slit or slot for the laser light to pass through to illuminate the faceplate indicia. The first motor is mounted between the printed circuit board and the second motor while a connecting post may be utilized between the first and second motors to position the laser closer to the faceplate indicia, depending upon spatial packaging requirements and the laser light of the laser.

In order to bring as much light as possible into a dial pointer 20, the panel has a translucent plate 22, the front face of which forms the dial face. Light is introduced into the translucent plate through a plurality of light pipes 44, and is then directed into a catchment area 30 for pointer illumination by converging facets 35,38 formed in the plate. The facets are arranged with a wide opening which receives light traveling in the plate and with a tapering or converging area in which the light incident in the wide opening is continuously reflected into the pointer illumination catchment area.

A luminous band display device is shown for the thermometer scale-like diay of the position of a control, e.g., of a turning knob or slide, having a series of luminous segments arranged in a circular or straight pattern. The luminous segments are formed by the ends of light guides which are led out from a generally cylindrical luminous center in a star-shaped or similar pattern. The luminous center consists of a cylindrical socket receiving a light source, and a cover which carries at least one color band and which can be rotated relative to the socket by means of the control is located between the light source and the beginning of the light guide. The light guides are arranged over approximately three fourths of the circumference of the luminous center. In order for all luminous segments of the entire display scale to light in only one color even in the stop positions of the control, an outlet opening and a guide for the color bands projecting from the socket are provided.

An instrument illuminating arrangement for the glare-free illumination of indicators such as characters of the instrument display area or, especially of movable hands or movable displays or electronically variable characters, has an excitation source which is so arranged as to irradiate the surfaces of the indicators and cause them to emit visible light. Preferably the excitation source generates light energy at least to some extent in the invisible range and the indicators' surfaces are provided with luminophors which convert the invisible light into visible light so that the light energy supplied to the indicators will not disturb the operator of, for example, a vehicle equipped with such instruments.
