The frequency multiplication unit generates a frequency multiplication signal based on the digital signal. The profile generation circuit performs frequency division on the frequency multiplication signal to get a profile signal. An AC power controller system applies three-phase AC operating power to an induction motor that drives a non-linear mechanical load. A primary low pass filter is connected in series between branch phase conductors and a power controller of the type that uses gate-controlled switching thyristors for controlling power to the motor. KVAR capacitors connected between the power controller and the induction motor phase windings form a secondary low pass filter across the controller output terminals. The primary and secondary low pass filters isolate the power controller and induction motor with respect to spurious noise and harmonics generated by local as well as remote sources, and also improve real power transfer efficiency from the power generating source to the induction motor by transforming the effective impedance of the power source and induction motor load.

An AC--AC multi-module matrix PWM converter includes one to a plurality of phase banks within which are provided architecturally identical basic circuit modules of single phase output AC--AC matrix converters. Each basic converter module includes three-phase AC inputs and two output terminals. The modules may then be interconnected in series or parallel with other modules within a phase bank to increase the output voltage or current respectively of the phase bank. The differential power module structure and the differential phase PWM modulation scheme increases the output voltage by 15.5% in comparison with 120.degree. phase modulation. Individually designed and tested phase banks can be further connected to a higher power symmetric three phase system or multiphase system for various AC load and AC motor controls. The modular structure permits standardization of the power electronics design and manufacture at system level. The modular design permits using power components at lower voltage or current rating with low cost while obtaining higher power output through module integration.

An induction generator/motor system has an induction machine connected at its secondary side to a cyclo-converter. An induced voltage develops when the cyclo-converter pauses during a transient phenomenon occurring in the system. When the induced voltage exceeds a predetermined voltage range which covers the maximum output voltage derivable from the cyclo-converter, the polarity of thyristor converters of the cyclo-converter is switched such that the induced voltage is applied to a thyristor converter to be rendered conductive next in forward relationship therewith, thereby preventing occurrence of an overvoltage.

A load control device may control power delivered from a power source, such as an alternating-current (AC) power source, to at least two electrical loads, such as a lighting load and a motor load. The load control device may include multiple load control circuit, such as a dimmer circuit and a motor drive circuit, for controlling the power delivered to the lighting load and the motor load, respectively. The load control device may adjust the rotational speed of the motor load in a manner so as to minimize acoustic noise generated by the load control device and reduce the amount of time required to adjust the rotational speed of the motor load. The load control device may remain powered when one of the electrical loads (e.g., the lighting load) has been removed (e.g., electrically disconnected or uninstalled) and/or has failed in an open state (has “burnt out” or “blown out”).
