When, for example, MAC (multiplexed analog components) signals (inter alia C-MAC or D2-MAC signals) are recorded directly on a video recorder and no special steps are taken, information will be lost as a result of the change-over from recording by one write head to recording by another write head. The relevant signals to be recorded include a sequence of lines with a first signal block containing a line-synchronizing signal and at least one additional signal, and a second signal block containing the chrominance luminance information of the video signal. Specific first signal blocks or at least the additional signals of these first signal blocks are accommodated in a second signal block of a non-relevant video line and are subsequently recorded on the record carrier. After the relevant second signal block has been read from the record carrier, the relevant first signal blocks, or at least the additional signals of these first signal blocks, are extracted from the second signal block and re-inserted into the data stream of first signal blocks at their original locations. The relevant first signal blocks may be those first signal blocks during which the heads are switched or may be other (subsequent, with respect to time) first signal blocks which can no longer be inserted into the data stream of the first signal blocks because these first signal blocks, during which head switching is effected, have been repeated earlier in the data stream.

An apparatus for selectively recording a baseband signal and a MUSE signal on a magnetic tape and for reproducing them at different speeds including: a magnetic head circuit having first and second groups of heads provided separately form each other. Each of the head groups includes four rotary heads for consecutively and helically scanning the tape to record and reproduce the baseband and MUSE signals. The apparatus further includes: an apparatus for providing a mode designating signal for designating an operational mode of the apparatus; a signal processing circuit which can process the baseband and MUSE signals, in response to the mode designating signal, for processing one of the baseband and MUSE signals; a head switching circuit for switching the connection between the signal processing circuit and the respective rotary heads in response to the mode designating signal; and a scanning speed adjusting circuit for adjusting the relative scanning speed of the rotary head and the recording tape in response to the mode designating signal. The apparatus can appropriately switch the scanning speed and the connection between the rotary heads and the signal processing circuit according to the type of signal and operational mode. Thus, the baseband signal is recorded as a two channel signal on the magnetic tape and the MUSE signal is recorded as a one channel signal. Also, the apparatus can reproduce the baseband and MUSE signals recorded according to the above-described track pattern at a different speeds, respectively.

A video signal is time division multiplexed prior to recording using a time base compression device including a random access memory, instead of serial shift registers or the like. Large time base errors in the incoming video signal are accommodated without creating conflicts between memory read and write operations of successive video lines and without requiring a spare memory. Instead, the time compression random access memory has dual data ports, and successive video lines are loaded into and unloaded out of different locations in the random access memory simultaneously through different ports at different data rates to achieve the requisite time compression. As a result, the usual requirement to route incoming video signals to a spare memory in case of a time base error, for avoiding memory read and write conflicts, is eliminated by the invention.

A color difference time division multiplex (TDM) signal is produced from the two color difference signals by a time base compression and time base multiplexing. A burst signal is added on the luminance signal and the color difference TDM signal as a time base information. The color difference TDM signal is recorded on an inner area of a disc. The luminance signal which has a wide signal band is recorded on an outer area of a disc which has a good frequency response characteristic.
