A surface wave phase correlator comprises a pair of substantially identical launch and receiving filter electrode patterns disposed on a common piezoelectric substrate. The correlator is employed with receiving and processing circuitry in a monopulse radar system to provide relative phase information for target calculations by a digital processor. Fast rise and fall times for the correlator output signals enable rapid digital processing of incoming target signals.

A SAW signal processor includes a plurality of FET taps having individually programmable source-drain bias which controls both the amplitude and the phase of the mixing efficiency of internal product mixing of waves passing beneath the tap, in dependence upon the amplitude and polarity of the bias, the gates of the FETs may be interconnected so as to provide a summation of correlation at the output. Embodiments include multi-FET taps formed on substrates that are both semiconductive and piezoelectric, such as n-type epitaxial gallium aresenide, and ZnO coated silicon. Simple biphase and weighted biphase of phase-shifted tap pairs, for complete phase control, are disclosed.

Signals extracted from the taps of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) device, as a consequence of a single wave propogating therein or as a consequence of interaction between a pair of waves propagating therein, are processed by linearly-controlled nonlinear product mixing and/or amplifying devices, to provide output signals in a serial chain of chips of RF, the magnitude of chips being dependent upon unique, selected bias applied to corresponding ones of the devices. The devices may be diodes operating in a bias range to provide impedence greater than the capacitive reactance impedance of the taps to which they are attached, thereby providing a linear RF voltage to DC bias current characteristic, while at the same time providing a nonlinear DC voltage to DC current characteristic for RF product mixing (where used); or the devices may comprise transistors, either field effect or bipolar, with similar suitable bias considerations when linearly-controlled product mixing is desired. Applications, with or without output frequency isolation from input frequencies, include time division multiplexing of DC signals (such as transducer output signals), and transversal filtering, of the type useful in correlation or other wave or coded signal analysis.

Applicants discovered that by employing selected transducer geometries, such as unbalanced dual-finger geometries, certain reflections, called "Mechanical electrical loaded" (MEL) reflections, can be generated which tend to cancel reflected waves inherently generated by surface acoustic wave devices.In particular, the disclosure is directed to a transducer for a surface acoustic wave device adapted for coupling to an electrical load and/or source. A pair of interdigitated comb electrodes are formed on an acoustic wave propagating substrate, for example a piezoelectric substrate. Means, such as input or output terminals, are provided for applying an electrical load and/or source across the pair of comb electrodes. Each of the comb electrodes has a plurality of interdigitated electrode fingers. The width of at least some of the adjacent fingers of the electrodes are different and are selected as a function of the impedance of the load and/or source to produce mechanical electrical loaded (MEL) reflections in said substrate which tend to cancel regeneration wave (RW) reflections generated at the transducer in the substrate. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, each of the comb electrodes has at least two adjacent electrode fingers of different widths, and preferably has a plurality of adjacent finger pairs of different widths.

A sidestepping acoustic surface wave filter device employing a 3 dB multistrip coupler between the input transducer and the offset output transducer. A reflector is located across the track associated with the input transducer in the region adjacent to the output transducer. The 3 dB coupler causes the output transducer and the reflector to receive equal acoustic surface wave energy. The reflector is designed so that the energy reflected by it is equal to the energy returned by the output transducer. Phase shifts produced in the returning acoustic surface waves by the coupler cause the returning acoustic surface waves to be suppressed in the track associated with the input transducer. Thus, triple transit signals are avoided.

The present invention relates to the modification of the temperature-induced drift in propagation time of surface elastic waves. The invention proposes to achieve this modification by selecting a suitable crystal cut of the crystalline substrate, and carrying out a localized ion bombardment of the surface at which the elastic waves propagate.
