Abstract: A method, apparatus, and system for barring at least one UE from communicating with one or more RISs is disclosed. A base station may determine to bar at least one UE from communicating with one or more RISs of a plurality of RISs. The base station may transmit, to the at least one UE, a barring indication for the one or more RISs. The barring indication may identify the one or more RISs with which the at least one UE is barred from communicating. The UE may determine to refrain from communicating with the one or more RISs based on the barring indication. The UE may communicate with the base station based on the determination to refrain from communicating with the one or more RISs.

The UE may select a primary RIS for bidirectional wireless communication (e.g., uplink and downlink) and one or more secondary RISs for unidirectional wireless communication (e.g., uplink or downlink) based on the configuration. The UE may use the one or more secondary RISs to enable higher throughput and extended coverage in the wireless communication system. The UE may communicate with the base station using the primary RIS, or the secondary RIS, or both.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A first device (e.g., a base station) may transmit reference signals to a second device (e.g., a user equipment (UE)) via transmitter antenna circles. The second device may receive and measure the reference signals via corresponding receiver antenna circles. The second device may transmit channel gain measurements to the first device based on measuring the reference signals. The first device may determine orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes, a power loading scheme, or both for the transmitter antenna circles based on the channel gain measurements. The first device may transmit OAM transmissions to the second device based on the determined OAM modes, the power loading scheme, or both. The OAM transmissions may have different OAM states, polarizations, or both.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described that support signaling of compressed gradient vectors in a machine learning system that utilizes federated learning. The compressed gradient vectors may be used to report stochastic gradients from multiple edge devices (e.g., multiple user equipment (UE) devices) that are combined into a global model at an edge server (e.g., a base station). A base station may configure a UE with one or more parameters for quantizing a local stochastic gradient, and for reporting the quantized local stochastic gradient in a set of compressed gradient vectors. Each vector of the compressed gradient vectors may be associated with a different stage of a multi-stage compression procedure for reporting the local stochastic gradient, and multiple reports from multiple UEs may be aggregated in a federated learning procedure associated with a machine learning algorithm.
