    Abstract: A bedding or seating product comprising a spring assembly made up of a plurality of parallel strings of springs joined to each other. Each of the strings of springs comprises a row of interconnected pocketed coil springs. Selected pockets of fabric are shorter than adjacent pockets, so coil springs in the selected pockets are under a greater load than adjacent coil springs. In one preferred embodiment, every other pocket is under a greater load than the adjacent pockets, resulting in a checkerboard arrangement in at least one area of the product.

    Abstract: A lumbar support to be installed in a seat has an apex that varies vertically along a guide rail. The said guide rail has an upper stop and a lower stop. A bowing element disposed on the guide rail travels in a substantially vertical plane.     Abstract: A mechanical fuse is used with ergonomic devices for seats such as automobile seats to allow the ergonomic devices to tolerate abusive loads without breaking a linkage, such as a traction cable, used to move the ergonomic supports. The traction cable is comprised of a sleeve with a wire disposed to slide axially through the sleeve. The mechanical fuse is installed with the sleeve divided into two sections, with an end of each section seated into a male component or a female component of the mechanical fuse. The male and female components of the mechanical fuse slide axially relative to one another but are restrained from sliding by insertion of a boss on one component into a detent on the other component. The boss and detent hold the male and female components together in a friction fit that resists axial movement. When an abusive force is applied to the fuse, the friction fit of the boss and detent is overcome so that the boss slides out of the detent in a radial direction. Once released, the male and female components slide axially into one another, shortening the overall distance of the traction cable sleeve until the abusive load is released so that the traction cable sleeves can resume their originally selected relative spacing. The friction fit is maintained by the compressive biasing of an external spring. The compressive force is resisted, and the fuse is reset, by the expansive force of an internal spring.

    Abstract: This invention provides a spring assembly for use in a chair tilt control mechanism. The tilt control mechanism is one that can recline and return a backrest for a chair. The spring assembly includes a cylindrical block that has first and second ends and a central bore. A pair of end caps is located at each of the first and second ends of the block. Each end cap has a receiving section that can rotate within the central bore of the block. Each end cap also has a hole extending through it that provides a coupling point for the chair backrest. The spring assembly also includes at least one steel coil spring around the block. The spring has one terminal end coupled to the tilt control mechanism and the other end coupled to one of the end caps. The end caps rotate within the block as the chair backrest is reclined or returned. The force needed to rotate the end caps is a sum of the spring force provided by the spring and the frictional relationship between the block and the end caps.

    Abstract: A method for roll packing foam mattress cores includes the step of providing a radially collapsible mandrel for winding up the foam material. Compression of the foam material is accomplished during the roll operation via a compression roller associated with the mandrel. After a sufficient amount of foam material has been rolled, the mandrel is collapsed to facilitate easy removal of the roll. In one embodiment of the invention, packing material is applied to a surface of the foam as it is rolled to prevent adhesion of successive layers in the roll.
