Abstract: The filtering apparatus comprises at least one filtering material pleated in fanfold formation and arranged between the inflow or upstream side and the outflow or downstream side. Each pleat open toward the inflow or upstream side possesses a rounded base. The radius of the rounded base is in the range of 0.05 to 0.3 times the pleat depth. Each pleat open toward the outflow or downstream side terminates in an acute angle. A dimensionally stable insert is positioned within each pleat which is open toward the outflow or downstream side. The insert is preferably formed of flat material and comprises bilaterally protuberant deformations. The inserts are provided with bores at least at the protuberant deformations. Each of the inserts space the two confronting downstream sides of the associated filtering pleat and prevent that the filtering material, at high-pressure conditions, is pressed together and becomes impervious at the locations pressed against the inserts. In this filtering apparatus, filter cake consisting of filtered-out particles is easily separated and removed from the filtering material in a cleaning operation performed by a medium flowing from the outflow side to the inflow side of the filtering apparatus.

Abstract: The method for spacing the folds of a folded filter media assembly includes the steps of separating the folds of the filter media by the use of the tapered assembly comb having uniformly spaced teeth and subsequently inserting a rigid divider into the separated and spaced media folds to produce a uniformly spaced filter media. The comb can be discarded after the divider is inserted, and, accordingly, the comb is made of an inexpensive material having a desired degree of rigidity for handling, e.g., cardboard. The uniformly spaced filter media assembly is inserted into an operative position for filtering, e.g., as an air filter.

Abstract: This invention comprehends a new and unique means for preventing the crowns (forward projections of the pleats) of a backflushable filter element from splitting due to the cyclic action that is experienced during cleaning and backflushing. In one embodiment, a plurality of spacers, preferably wedge shape, is positioned between the outwardly projecting pleats of the filter media thereby preventing the splitting thereof. A plurality of spacers may also be placed between the inwardly projecting pleats to provide additional support during the cleaning and backflushing cycle. In another embodiment a ring is placed adjacent the inwardly directed pleats and the inner end cap lip; this also prevents splitting of the crowns when the filter element is subjected to the cyclic action of cleaning and backflushing.

Abstract: A pleated media filter element is disclosed which includes pleat spacers which are an integral structural part of the pleated media. The construction of the pleat spacers is accomplished by scoring on the unfolded media a continuous line pattern upon the portion of the media which, when folded, forms a pleat tip of the element. When the scored media is folded into pleats the patterns each define areas on the respective pleat tips which are integral structural parts of the media itself. The configuration of the pattern causes a portion of the media at the pleat tip to project transversely relative to the respective pleat, serving thereby as an integral spacer to space the pleat apart from the pleats on either side thereof.

Abstract: A filter apparatus for removing contaminant particles from an air or gas stream, the apparatus including a filter medium, disposed therein in pleated form, across the air or gas stream to be treated. A rectangular frame has inner side walls defining therebetween a path for the air or gas stream to be treated. A filter medium is disposed in longitudinally-extending pleat form across an air or gas stream to be treated. A pleat spacer and supporting fiber is longitudinally co-extensive with the pleat filter medium. The fiber member consists integrally of a plurality of portions disposed along the pleat filter medium and of connecting portions extending at an acute angle from one end of the portion outside of the filter medium towards the other end, thereby providing a support inside the bend of each of the pleats and the connection portions extend crosswise to the pleats.

Abstract: 1,188,525. Oil filter. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. 27 April, 1967 [26 May, 1966], No. 23646/ 66. Heading B1D. An oil filter, for an I.C. engine, comprises a tubular pleated element 30 of resin-impregnated paper, having the flow resistance of one portion C thereof increased by compressing the pleats together and/or by adding a further filtering sheet 37 of similar porosity, outside or inside, whereby this portion takes a smaller flow rate per unit area than the rest and acts as a reserve of filtering capacity. Fig. 1 (not shown) illustrates a filter having compressed pleats only and Figs. 2-4 (not shown) a sliding jig whereby the pleats are so spaced. The further sheet may be bonded to the pleats all round its periphery (Figs. 5, 6, not shown) or at the ends only, with its sides merely folded between adjacent pleats (Figs. 8, 9, not shown), and may have a central aperture 39 and corner or side discontinuities in sealing, whereby it is by-passed when clogged. Pleats may be spaced by dimples (14, 15) and their ends sealed individually (16) and/or to end caps (Fig. 11, not shown) by adhesive.
