Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A user equipment (UE) may be communicating with a base station via beamformed transmissions on an active beam. The UE may receive from the base station refined reference signals (RRSs) that include an active beam RRS corresponding to the active beam. The UE may identify that the active beam RRS corresponds to the active beam and perform a beam state measurement on the active beam RRS. The UE may refine the active beam based at least in part on the beam state information of the active beam RRS.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A base station may transmit, to a user equipment (UE) operating in a discontinuous reception mode, a wakeup signal indicating whether data is available to be transmitted to the UE, the wakeup signal transmitted using a first set of transmit beams, which may be selected from a periodic beam management procedure, in accordance with a beam sweeping configuration. The base station may receive, from the UE and based at least in part on the wakeup signal, a response signal. The base station may perform, based at least in part on the response signal, further beam update procedures to identify a second set of transmit beams for future transmissions of the wakeup signal and/or for transmission of physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) to the UE.

Abstract: In millimeter wave systems, user equipment may not be able to receive RACH parameters through a PDCCH when the information is transmitted with an omni-directional beam. In an aspect of the disclosure, an apparatus, such as a base station, may determine the RACH parameters and transmit a subset of the RACH parameters via a PBCH. The user equipment may receive the RACH parameter subset and initiate a RACH procedure.

Abstract: A wireless device configured for discontinuous reception (DRX) may and operating in a system that uses directional beamforming may identify a random access time period after awaking from a DRX sleep mode. The device may then transmit a scheduling request during the random access time period. In some cases, the device may transmit the scheduling request using frequency resources also associated with random access transmissions. In other cases, the device may utilize resources that are not associated with random access. The determination of which frequency resources are used may depend on the length of the DRX. That is, if a device has been in a sleep mode for a long time, it may use random access frequency resources that are associated with a more robust transmission configuration.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. In aspects of the present disclosure, a user equipment (UE) may report metrics (e.g., received signal power, beam identifier) about synchronization signal (SS) beams using the same (e.g., or a similar) framework that is used for channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) reporting. Because SSs are intended to be broadcast across a wide coverage area in a beamformed manner, the SSs represent a promising complement to existing beam management techniques. Accordingly, beam management may be achieved at least in part based on reporting one or more metrics of beamformed SSs through a channel feedback framework.

Abstract: A transmit beamforming gain and a receive beamforming gain may be used when adjusting an uplink transmit power. For example, a user equipment (UE) may receive downlink communications from a base station on a receive beam having a beamforming gain that is different from a beamforming gain for an uplink transmit beam. The UE may adjust an uplink transmit power (e.g., for transmitting a random access channel (RACH)) based on a difference in the beamforming gains. For example, a parameter representing the difference in the beamforming gains, in addition to a maximum allowed transmit power, a target preamble received power, and an estimated path loss, may be used when determining an adjusted uplink transmit power for a RACH transmission. The adjustment may result in a higher or lower transmit power depending on the difference in the receive beamforming gain and the transmit beamforming gain.

Abstract: One apparatus may be configured to detect a set of beams from a base station. The apparatus may be further configured to select a beam of the set of beams. The apparatus may be further configured to determine at least one resource based on the selected beam. The apparatus may be further configured to transmit, on the at least one determined resource, a beam adjustment request to the base station. The request may indicate an index associated with the selected beam. Another apparatus may be configured to transmit a first set of beams. The other apparatus may be further configured to receive a beam adjustment request on at least one resource. The other apparatus may be further configured to determine a beam index of a beam in the first set of beams based on the request and the at least one resource.

Abstract: A receiving device may remain in omni-directional mode while receiving RTS messages from transmitting devices. Multiple devices may transmit RTS messages at the same time, causing interference and preventing intended recipients of the RTS messages from transmitting a CTS message. To increase medium reuse, RTS may be transmitted and received in a slotted and directional manner. A receiving device may select a sweeping pattern for receiving transmission from neighboring devices. The receiving device may also determine one or more time slots allocated to each of the neighboring devices for receiving transmissions from the neighboring devices. The receiving device may transmit an indication of the sweeping pattern and the time slots to one or more of the neighboring devices. Subsequently, during one of the indicated time slots, the receiving device may perform a beam sweep to receive one or more RTS messages from one of the neighboring devices.

In some aspects, the number of symbols used to communicate the uplink control information may be based on a link gain associated with the UE and/or based on a payload size of the uplink control information. As another example, the user equipment may send channel information for a number of beams to the base station. In some aspects, the number of beams may be based on the type of channel that is used to send the uplink control information.
