Abstract: STRAND HANDLING APPARATUS INCLUDING A SYSTEM FOR CONTROLLING A CYCLING TENDER WHICH SCANS AND SERVICES BOBBIN WINDING STATIONS ON A SPINNING OR TWISTING MACHINE, OR THE LIKE. THE CONTROL SYSTEM PROVIDES A SIGNAL INDICATING WHEN A STATION BEING SCANNED IS OPERATIONAL AND A SERVICE SIGNAL WHEN THE STATION REQUIRES SERVICING UPON RECEIPT OF BOTH OF THESE SIGNALS THE CONTROL SYSTEM INITIATES A WORK CYCLE OF THE TENDER TO SERVICE THE STATION. THE SERVICE SIGNAL IS PROVIDED EITHER WHEN THE BOBBIN AT THE SCANNED STATION IS READY TO BE DOFFED OR WHEN THERE IS AN INTERRUPTION IN THE ADVANCING STRAND TO THE BOBBIN. IF THERE ARE MORE THAN A PREDETERMINED NUMBER OF SUCH INTERRUPTION SIGNALS DURING A CYCLE, THIS SIGNAL IS RENDERED INEFFECTIVE BY THE CONTROL SYSTEM TO CAUSE SERVICING OF THE STATION. IF A ROLL-WRAP OCCURS ON A DRAFTING ROLL, AN INDICATOR WHICH COOPERATES IN PROVIDING THE OPERATIONAL SIGNAL IS MOVED TO A NON-OPERATIONAL POSITION SO THAT THIS SIGNAL IS NOT PROVIDED AND THEREAFTER THE TENDER BY-PASSES ONLY THE PARTICULAR STATION UNTIL THE STATION IS AGAIN PLACED IN OPERATIONAL CONDITION, AS BY AN ATTENDANT. WHEN THE INDICATOR IS MOVED TO ITS NON-OPERATIONAL POSITION IT CAUSES THE STRAND TO BE BROKEN PRIOR TO ENTERING DRAFTING ROLLS OF THE STATION.

Abstract: Apparatus for segregating a jumbled mass of bobbins and delivery of the bobbins one at a time in axial orientation. A chain conveyor includes a plurality of buckets for receiving bobbins. These buckets open inwardly and together form the bottom of a hopper which receives the jumbled bobbins. As the conveyor is driven, a bucket receives a bobbin from the hopper and carries the bobbin upwardly along a substantially straight path to a discharge chute at an upper portion of the apparatus. The buckets have a particular cross-sectional configuration so that when they are on the straight upwardly extending path they will retain only one bobbin having a rounded cross section and within a particular range of diameters varying from an empty bobbin core to a full bobbin. If a second bobbin is picked up by a bucket it will drop from the bucket along the straight path and fall back into the hopper. By varying the inclination of the buckets along the straight portion of the path, the range may be varied. A bobbin in the hopper may tend to align itself with its axis parallel to the direction of movement of the buckets and would thus block the buckets from receiving bobbins having their axes transverse to the path of movement of the buckets. Such a parallel bobbin flips into position with its axis transverse to the path of the buckets upon movement of an inclined edge of an adjacent bucket against the bobbin in a direction transverse to the general upward path of the buckets. Concurrently with such transverse movement of each bucket, a finger is moved across the inclined edge and transfers any strands of yarn extending across the edge into a cutter. Alternatively, each bucket may be provided with a cutter which is moved across the inclined edge, in lieu of the finger and common cutter. Bobbins are fed into the hopper responsive to a reduction in weight of the bobbins in the hopper and the hopper is driven intermittently to deliver bobbins one at a time responsive to an external demand.

Abstract: A winding machine incorporating yarn-traversing mechanism having a pair of oppositely moving belt spans, each provided with yarnengaging guides or fingers operable in a yarn-traversing zone to move the yarn along a path in a controlled manner to wind a package of yarn, the yarn being transferred at each end of the package from an active finger traversing the yarn in one direction axially of the package to an oppositely moving finger. In the yarn-traversing zone each of the belt spans moves generally parallel to the axis of the package being wound. Means are provided for causing the yarn to slide gradually outwardly along the finger which is traversing it as the yarn progresses axially across the package. Said means is so configured that the yarn is caused to disengage from its finger at a locus corresponding to an end of said package whereupon the yarn is disposed for immediate engagement by an oppositely moving finger which traverses the yarn in the opposite direction. Reciprocation of the yarn axially to and fro of the package is thus achieved.

Abstract: A device for orienting bobbins having opposite ends of different sizes. A gauge is provided for receiving only the smaller end of the bobbin. As the bobbin is delivered to the device either the larger or the smaller end may be presented to the gauge. In the event that the smaller end is presented to the gauge the bobbin is supported solely on a trap door which opens so that the smaller end of the bobbin pivots about the gauge as the bobbin is discharged large end downward. If the larger end of the bobbin is presented to the gauge, the smaller end is above an abutment with an intermediate portion of the bobbin supported by the trap door so that when the trap door is opened the smaller end pivots about the abutment and again the bobbin is discharged larger end downward.

Abstract: 1,165,677. Fuel cell electrodes. LEESONA CORP. 23 Sept., 1966 [30 Sept., 1965], No. 42458/66. Heading H1B. Electrodes are made by applying a mixture of a base metal and a hydrophobic polymer to a porous metal support, heating the resultant structure to bond or sinter the polymer and then replacing the exposed surface of the base metal with a more noble metal. The replacement can be (1) electrolytic; (2) by amalgamation with Hg followed by replacement of the Hg; (3) by using a multi-component or multi-phase base metal alloy, selectively corroding the components or phases and simultaneously or subsequently replacing the metal with a noble metal; or (4) by impregnating the base metal with hydrogen and then replacing electrolytically the hydrogen on the base metal with a noble metal, in a modification of this method the base metal is replaced by niobium oxide.
