Abstract: An example of a system for providing patient care guidance to a caregiver based on ultrasound detection of blood flow includes a defibrillator including an electrode assembly and an output device, a portable computing device communicatively coupled to the defibrillator and including an output device, a Doppler shift waveform evaluation engine disposed at the defibrillator and/or the portable computing device, and a wearable ultrasound blood flow sensor configured to couple to a patient and the defibrillator and/or the portable computing device and to generate data signals representing a Doppler shift waveform. The engine is configured to receive the data signals representing the waveform, generate caregiver instructions according to a cardiac arrest protocol, analyze the waveform based on the received data signals, identify heart-induced blood flow based on the waveform analysis, and generate and provide caregiver instructions according to a non-cardiac arrest protocol based on the identified heart-induced blood flow.

Abstract: This document describes a system for determining positioning of an intubation tube in a patient. The system can include a first acoustic sensor configured to be disposed to listen to one of a lung and a stomach of the patient and to provide a first signal. The system includes a signal processing unit, coupled to the first acoustic sensor, configured to analyze spectral components of the first signal and determine whether a frequency of the spectral components of the first signal are characteristic of sounds induced by ventilation via the intubation tube of airflow to the lung or the stomach of the patient.

Abstract: A system for monitoring performance of a resuscitation activity on a patient by an acute care provider is provided. The system includes: a first wearable sensor configured to sense movement of a first portion of an acute care provider's hand; a second wearable sensor configured to sense movement of a second portion of the acute care provider's hand; and a controller. The controller is configured to: receive and process signals representative of performance of a resuscitation activity from the first sensor and the second sensor; identify from the processed signals information indicative of at least one of a relative distance, a relative orientation, a change in relative distance and a change in relative orientation between the first sensor and the second sensor during performance of the resuscitation activity; and determine at least one resuscitation activity parameter based, at least in part, on the identified information.

A method for managing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) treatment to a person in need of emergency assistance includes monitoring, with an electronic medical device, a parameter that indicates a quality level of a CPR component being provided to the person by a user; determining, with the electronic medical device, that the parameter indicates that the quality level of CPR being provided is inadequate; and providing, to one or more rescuers of the person, an audible, visual, or tactile indication that a different person should perform the CPR component.

The system may further include a second unit, separate from the first unit, which may communicatively couple with the first unit, for providing defibrillation pulses to the patient. Abstract: Among other things, we describe a system that includes a first medical device for treating a patient at an emergency care scene, the first medical device including a processor and a memory configured to detect a request for a connection between the first medical device and a second medical device for treating the patient at the emergency care scene, the request for connection including an identifier of the second medical device, responsive to receiving the request for connection, enabling a wireless communication channel to be established between the first medical device and the second medical device based on the identifier of the second medical device and an identifier of the first medical device; and enabling transmission and/or exchange of patient data between the first medical device and the second medical device via the wireless communication channel. Such communications with more than two devices may also be possible.

Abstract: An external wearable defibrillator for monitoring a patient for cardiac-related events is provided. The defibrillator includes ECG sensors configured to be disposed about a torso of the patient, therapy electrodes, and at least one motion sensor. The ECG sensors, therapy electrodes, and at least one motion sensor are configured to be worn continuously for an extended period of time. The defibrillator includes a wearable medical device controller including at least one processor configured to receive ECG data, receive motion data, identify at least one of ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation, initiate a treatment protocol including a defibrillation shock, and, using at least one of the ECG data or the motion data, identify a predetermined pattern for syncope. The predetermined pattern includes bradycardia. The at least one processor is further configured to record the predetermined pattern in a memory and perform an intervening action to address the predetermined pattern.

Abstract: A method for evaluating emergency medical service according to embodiments of the present invention includes receiving emergency medical service data from a database, filtering the emergency medical service data based on a selection criteria to form a filtered emergency medical service data set, determining a first score from the filtered emergency medical service data set, where the first score indicates objective clinical performance quality for the filtered emergency medical service data set, determining a second score from the filtered emergency medical service data set, where the second score indicates objective operational performance quality for the filtered emergency medical service data set, merging the first score and the second score to form a composite score; and visually displaying the composite score to a user.
