Abstract: A non-contact obstacle detection (NCOD) system for an opening in a vehicle includes a cover panel, such as a glass pane, slidable between opened and closed positions within the opening. The system includes one or more infrared time-of-flight (IR-TOF) sensors which measure the length of a beam of infrared light by measuring the time that the infrared light in the beam takes to travel the length of the beam and to reflect back to the sensor. The IR-TOF sensors may be configured to provide a beam of light along either the side edge of the frame parallel to the sliding direction or a terminal edge generally transverse to the sliding direction. Methods are provided for detecting obstacles within the opening of the frame by controllers using the lengths of beams from each of those different beam configurations, and for self-calibrating the system.

Abstract: A load balancing mechanism for controlling concurrent operation of a pair of latches of a vehicle via a respective pair of links connecting the pair of latches to an actuator, the actuator for sharing by the pair of latches, the load balancing mechanism comprising: a housing for connecting to a body of the vehicle; a lever mounted to the housing at a pivot such that the lever is pivotable about the pivot; an actuator mounting point on the lever connecting the lever to the actuator, the actuator for rotating the lever about the pivot; and a load balancing element mounted on the lever at an axis and rotatable about the axis, such that each of the respective pair of links is positioned on opposite sides of the axis, said each of the respective pair of links for coupling to a corresponding one of the pair of latches; wherein operation of the actuator causes both rotation of lever about the pivot and rotation of the load balancing element about the axis while the pair of latches are operated concurrently. A power cinch system and a power release system can be included.

Abstract: A closure panel latch assembly can include an overslam bumper mechanism comprising a biasing element as a spring formed from a metallic material positioned relative to a slot of the latch assembly. The biasing element resists entry of a striker into the slot beyond a selected position in order to inhibit contact of the striker with a bottom end of the slot. Also provided is a closure panel latch assembly configured with the biasing element as a resilient element positioned relative to the slot of the latch assembly; The biasing element is coupled to the striker engagement member, such that the striker engagement member is positioned to engage the striker and resist travel of the striker towards the bottom end, wherein the biasing element controls the resistance to movement of the striker engagement member by the striker.

Abstract: A motor control system for controlling a brushless electric motor of a power operated actuator of a closure panel of a vehicle and method of operating the control system are provided. The control system includes a vector control system configured to receive a torque current based on a measured angular velocity of the motor and current of each of the phases and determine corresponding stationary reference frame voltages. The vector control system outputs pulse width modulation signals to the motor. A vector torque current limiter couples to the vector control system and the motor and is configured to determine the torque current drawn, receive the measured angular velocity and determine whether there is a reduction of the measured angular velocity and detects a pinch event and reduces the torque current in response to determining there is a reduction of the measured angular velocity of the brushless electric motor.

Abstract: A method for constructing an extension mechanism for a closure panel of a vehicle, the extension mechanism including an extension member housed in a body housing, such that the extension member extends and retracts with respect to the body housing as the closure panel is opened and closed, the extension mechanism having a first connection at one end for connecting the extension member to the vehicle and a second connection at the other end for connecting the body housing to the vehicle, the method comprising the steps of: overlapping a tube wall of the body housing with an end portion of the body housing, the end portion having a receiving indentation; receiving a deformed portion of the tube wall into the receiving indentation in order to form a crimp connection between the tube wall and the end portion; and positioning a clamping member having a body by at least a portion of the body over the tube wall, such that the deformed portion is sandwiched between the portion of the body and the receiving indentation.

Abstract: A non-contact obstacle detection (NCOD) system for a motor vehicle and a method of operating the non-contact obstacle detection system are disclosed. The NCOD system includes a main electronic control unit adapted to connect to a power source. At least one non-contact obstacle sensor is coupled to the main electronic control unit for detecting obstacles near a closure member of the vehicle. The control unit is configured to detect movement of the closure member, detect no obstacle using the at least one non-contact obstacle sensor, and alter movement of the closure member in response to no obstacle being detected while movement of the closure member is detected.

Abstract: In an embodiment, a latch includes a ratchet and pawl. A lock includes a link pivotable between unlocked and locked positions wherein a release lever operates the pawl, and the lever disconnects from the pawl respectively. A cam rotates between unlocking and locking positions wherein the link can move to the unlocked position, and the link pivots to the locked position respectively. An override member rotates between actuatable and non-actuatable positions wherein the lever can engage the override member to unlock the cam, and the lever disconnects from the override member respectively. The lock is positionable in an unlocked state wherein the link is unlocked, a locked state wherein the link is locked, the cam is in the locking position and the override member is actuatable, and a second locked state wherein the link is locked, the cam is in the locking position and the override member is non-actuatable.

Abstract: A door latch assembly for an automotive vehicle door includes a gearless cinch actuator. The cinch actuator includes an extensible housing member connected to a threaded rod by a nut. The extensible housing member is also connected to a cable for cinching the door. A motor rotates the threaded rod, which moves the extensible housing member between rest and cinched positions. The motor is connected to the threaded rod without the use of gears. An anti-friction agent, such as a combination of a PTFE-containing coating and PTFE-containing grease, is applied between the nut and the threaded rod. The materials and anti-friction agent used at the interface of the threaded rod and nut together provide a friction coefficient (μ) of about 0.045 or less.

Abstract: A closure latch assembly for a vehicle door includes a latch mechanism and a lock mechanism. The lock mechanism includes a lock link pivotable between unlock and lock positions, and dual cam arrangement which functions in coordination with rotation of a power lock gear to establish a first locked state where a first cam holds the lock link its lock position and a second locked state where a second cam holds the lock link in its lock position. An unlocked state is established when neither of the first and second cams engage the lock link in its unlock position.
