A document reading device includes: a document feed section; a contact glass plate on which an original document is fed from the document feed section; a white color reference member beside a front surface of the contact glass plate; a first reading unit beside a back surface of the contact glass plate, configured to read the original document on the front surface of the contact glass plate or the white color reference member; and a positioning member configured to position the white color reference member to be read selectively between a first reading position being the same position as the original document in contact with the front surface of the contact glass plate and a second reading position away from the front surface of the contact glass plate by a document passage clearance allowing the original document to pass between the contact glass plate and the white color reference member.

An image reading apparatus includes a document cover, a cover state detector that detects whether the document cover is open or closed, an image reading unit that reads an image by conducting an optical scan that moves a scanning body with a mounted light source, detecting reflected light from the target object with a photoelectric transducer, and outputting a signal expressing the detected pixel densities, a white reference plate used as a reference for correcting an image, a power manager that switches between a power-saving state and a standby state, and a controller that controls the respective units such that in the case of restoring the standby state due to detecting the opening or closing of the document cover, an image of a document is read to detect the document size, and an image of the white reference plate is read after the detection to acquire correction values.

In an image forming apparatus and a control method thereof according to this invention, in a case that a received print job designates image formation on a surface of a sheet on which an image has been formed, whether image formation on the sheet based on the print job is possible is determined based on at least image information of the sheet acquired by reading the image of the sheet. If it is determined that image formation on the sheet based on the print job is impossible, the image formation on the sheet is stopped. If it is determined that the image formation on the sheet based on the print job is possible, an image is formed on the sheet in accordance with the image information of the print job.

An image reading unit configured to rotate and read a front and a back of a document may deviate from an original reading position due to aged deterioration or an external physical impact and become incapable of reading an image accurately. An image processing apparatus rotates an image reading unit including a sensor in units of predetermined angles to read a white reference member, acquires luminance information about the white reference member at the respective predetermined angles of rotation, determines an angle at which the luminance information is greater than other pieces of the luminance information among a plurality of pieces of the acquired luminance information at the respective predetermined angles, and rotates the image reading unit based on the determined angle to correct a reference position of the image reading unit.
