Abstract: An aerosol-generating system including a cartridge is provided, the cartridge including a liquid storage portion including a housing configured to hold a liquid aerosol-forming substrate, the housing having an opening; and a heater assembly including at least one heater element fixed to the housing and extending across an opening of the housing, wherein a width of the at least one heater element of the heater assembly is smaller than a width of the opening of the housing. The heater element may be spaced from a periphery of the opening, leading to more efficient heating and aerosol production.

Abstract: An aerosol-generating system is provided, including: a storage compartment containing an aerosol-forming substrate; a retention material configured to retain the substrate; an aerosol-generating element proximate to the retention material; an aerosol-forming substrate flow path defined between the compartment and the retention material, the flow path including first and second internal diameters, the second diameter being greater than the first; a ferromagnetic body positioned in the flow path; and an electromagnet configured to move the body between the first and the second positions upon an application of power to the electromagnet, in which in the first position the body restricts flow of the substrate to the retention material to a greater degree than in the second position, and in which in the first position the body is aligned with the first diameter and in the second position the body is aligned with the second diameter.

Abstract: A method of controlling heating in an aerosol-generating system including a heater is provided, the method including: providing a predetermined power to the heater and monitoring a resistance of the heater, the monitored resistance being indicative of a temperature of the heater; monitoring for a predetermined condition and upon detection of the predetermined condition, recording the resistance of the heater; determining a target resistance corresponding to a target temperature of the heater based on the recorded resistance; and detecting a dry puff when the recorded resistance increases above a threshold value or when a power required to maintain the heater at the target resistance decreases below a threshold value. An aerosol-generating system including a heater, a power supply, and a controller to perform the method, is also provided.
