    摘要: This invention is directed at the makings of glass-ceramic which is uniquely suited for use as a disc substrate for utilization in a magnetic memory storage device. The glass ceramic material exhibits a crystal phase assemblage comprised predominately of a mixture of lithium disilicate and tridymite which are uniformly interspersed with a residual glass phase and form an interlocked microstructure with the glass. The composition consists essentially, expressed in terms of weight percent on the oxide basis, of 75-95% SiO.sub.2, 3-15% Li.sub.2 O, 0-6% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, and 0-6% K.sub.2 O. The nucleating agent for this glass-ceramic is selected from the group consisting of 0-0.1% Pd and 0-5% P.sub.2 O.sub.5 ; however if Pd is absent the P.sub.2 O.sub.5 amount is at least 0.5% and if P.sub.2 O.sub.5 is absent then the Pd amount is at least 0.005%. Additionally, up to 15% of optional ingredients may be added, including, B.sub.2 O.sub.3, Na.sub.2 O, ZnO, MgO, CaO, SrO, ZrO.sub.2, TiO.sub.2, F, Sb.sub.2 O.sub.3, As.sub.2 O.sub.3, PbO and BaO.

    摘要: This invention is directed toward of a glass-ceramic article consisting essentially, expressed in terms of weight percent on the oxide basis, of about 64-70% SiO.sub.2, 18-22% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 3.3-4% Li.sub.2 O, 2-5% ZnO, 0-2% MgO, 1.5-3.5% ZrO.sub.2, 0.5-2.5% TiO.sub.2, 3.5-4.5% ZrO.sub.2 +TiO.sub.2, 0.5-1.5% As.sub.2 O.sub.5 and 0-0.5% SnO.sub.2. The glass-ceramic article disclosed herein, is comprised of adjacent areas which exhibit visible transmissions ranging from transparent-to-opaque. The transparent areas are clear, transparent and essentially colorless and contain stuffed .beta.-quartz as essentially the sole crystal phase. On the other hand, the translucent-to-opaque areas contain .beta.-spodumene as the predominant crystal phase with a minor amounts of gahnite crystals resulting from the thermal transformation of said stuffed .beta.-quartz. This gahnite phase is present in an amount sufficient to compensate for the transformation of said stuffed .beta.-quartz to .beta.-spodumene, resulting in a dimensional change, expressed in terms of density change, of essentially zero.

    摘要: This invention is concerned with the production of substantially transparent glass-ceramic articles containing mullite as the predominant crystal phase which can be prepared by crystallizing in situ precursor glasses capable of being melted at temperatures no higher than 1650.degree. C. The inventive articles consist essentially, in weight percent, of 10-70% SiO.sub.2, 7-40% B.sub.2 O.sub.3, 14-50% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-35% RO, wherein RO consists of at least one member of the group in the indicated proportions of 0-15% MgO, 0-20% CaO, 0-30% SrO, 0-30% BaO, and 0-30% PbO, and 0-30% R.sub.2 O, wherein R.sub.2 O consists of at least one member of the group in the indicated proportions of 0-10% Li.sub.2 O, 0-15% Na.sub.2 O, 0-25% K.sub.2 O, 0-25% Rb.sub.2 O, and 0-25% Cs.sub.2 O, the mole ratio Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 :RO+R.sub.2 O>1.3. Where 0.01-1% Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3 is included in the composition, the glass-ceramic will exhibit broad absorption over the visible region of the radiation spectrum, strong fluorescence in the red and near infrared portions of the spectrum where exposed to ultraviolet and/or visible radiation, and relatively little overlap of the absorption and fluorescent spectra.
