摘要: A glass-ceramic material which exhibits extremely low (e.g. less than 100 ppm) shrinkage, when exposed to 900° C. for 6 hours, and methods for making such glass-ceramics. The glass-ceramic is cerammed at a sufficiently high temperature and then cooling in a controlled manner, preferably to below the strain point of the resultant material. Using this technique, glass-ceramic materials were fabricated which exhibited dimensional shrinkage comparable to and in some cases even less than that achieved by fused silica substrates, when exposed to high temperature poly-Si processing temperatures (e.g. 900° C. for 6 hours).

摘要: This invention is directed toward of a glass-ceramic article consisting essentially, expressed in terms of weight percent on the oxide basis, of about 64-70% SiO.sub.2, 18-22% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 3.3-4% Li.sub.2 O, 2-5% ZnO, 0-2% MgO, 1.5-3.5% ZrO.sub.2, 0.5-2.5% TiO.sub.2, 3.5-4.5% ZrO.sub.2 +TiO.sub.2, 0.5-1.5% As.sub.2 O.sub.5 and 0-0.5% SnO.sub.2. The glass-ceramic article disclosed herein, is comprised of adjacent areas which exhibit visible transmissions ranging from transparent-to-opaque. The transparent areas are clear, transparent and essentially colorless and contain stuffed .beta.-quartz as essentially the sole crystal phase. On the other hand, the translucent-to-opaque areas contain .beta.-spodumene as the predominant crystal phase with a minor amounts of gahnite crystals resulting from the thermal transformation of said stuffed .beta.-quartz. This gahnite phase is present in an amount sufficient to compensate for the transformation of said stuffed .beta.-quartz to .beta.-spodumene, resulting in a dimensional change, expressed in terms of density change, of essentially zero.

The glass-ceramic has a composition, in weight percent on an oxide basis, consisting essentially of about: 40-60% SiO2; 10-25% Al2O3; 18-30% MgO; 3-10% Na2O; 0-10% K2O; >5-15% TiO2. The invention further comprises a method for achieving high crystalline yield at such a low liquidus with increased solubility of high levels of chromium ions. The glass-ceramics can be used in drawing optical fibers and as gain media in amplifier and laser devices for near infrared wavelengths.

摘要: A gain medium for use in optical amplifiers or laser oscillators is disclosed. The gain medium includes a transition-metal doped glass-ceramic material having a crystal phase and a glass phase. The crystal phase is formed in situ in the glass phase, with the transition metal ions preferentially partitioning into the crystals from the glass phase. The crystals so formed have a size of less than 50 nm, and the transition metal ions within them are capable of lasing at a wavelength within the range of about 900 to 3000 nm. Also disclosed are amplifier and laser oscillator configurations, where the glass-ceramic gain medium is applied in a variety of configurations. Also disclosed is a method of amplifying a signal of light wherein the glass-ceramic gain medium is pumped with light energy so as to excite the transition metal ions, and the signal of light is transmitted through the gain medium while the transition metal ions are excited, whereby the signal of light is amplified. Also disclosed is a method of producing laser oscillation wherein the glass-ceramic gain medium is included in a laser cavity, pumped with optical energy to excite the transition metal ions, and the resulting radiation is forced to oscillate by the use of reflecting surfaces for feedback.
