A funicular system including a passenger carriage or vehicle (21) supported for movement along a path relative to a support surface (22) , an endless haul rope (23) mounted in a loop-like plurality of support sheaves (26, 27, 28) for guided movement along the path, and grip assembly (24) coupled to the carriage (21) and coupled to the haul rope (23) and formed for passage of the grip assembly (24) over the support sheaves (26, 27, 28) without significant relative displacement between the haul rope (23) and support sheaves (26, 27, 28). The grip assembly (24) preferably is comprised of a linear array of band assemblies (41a-41n) which encircle the haul rope (23) and have a relatively thin thickness dimension. The band assemblies (41a-41n) are clamped to the haul rope by a clamp (32) and coupled by a flexible link (56) to the undercarriage (59) of the vehicle (21). The grip (24 ) allows the haul rope (23) to be positively contained between support sheaves (26, 27, 28) with the grip (24) passing therebetween so that the haul rope position can be used to control and guide the position of the vehicle or carriage (21). Reduction of splice length and splice fatigue also is effected by the haul rope grip assembly (21).

To detect impending deropement of a wire haul rope from supporting sheaves in an aerial tramway system, there is provided a magnetic assembly having sufficient field strength to support itself in a predetermined position by reason of attraction to the wire haul rope when running normally in the sheaves. When the wire haul rope begins to run off one of the sheaves toward an impending deropement, the magnetic assembly will fall from its armed position to a substantially moved position. The magnetic assembly carries at least one position-responsive switch which interrupts a detection circuit when the magnet moves to the moved position. The interruption of the detection circuit is utilized to detect the location of the potential deropement and to terminate tramway operation.

An automatic, rail-based passenger and cargo transportation system which is particularly well suited for use as a moderate speed people mover is disclosed. The system includes a rail structure on which passive carrier cars are movably supported from opposite sides of the rail. In one aspect a plurality of drive wheels are rotatably mounted to the rail assembly and span across the width of the rail structure so as to drive the carrier cars along the rail in opposite directions on opposite sides of the rail. In another aspect of the invention, the carrier cars are cantilever supported from the sides of the rail so as to cause gravity biasing of the cars inwardly such that a shoe is forced into driving engagement with alternating toothed and smooth drive wheels mounted in the rail framework and sufficiently spaced so that only one toothed drive wheel interengages with the shoe assembly at any time. The people mover system further includes power transmission means which couples a plurality of the drive wheels and drive motors together for operation as a unit to provide ease of control of the multi-carrier unit system and redundancy against motor failures. Alternative drive wheel configurations and locations are disclosed, as are alternate power transmission assemblies and methods for driving passive or unpowered carrier cars along the rail structure.

A cushion assembly for cushioning obstacles to prevent injury to skiers. Inflated gas bladders are held upright against obstacles such as ski lift support columns. The materials used for fabrication are selected to be substantially water-impervious so that melted snow cannot refreeze and create an undesirably rigid cushion that will injure a skier who skis into it. The cushion assembly is adjustable to include as many bladders as necessary to cushion the obstacle against skier impact.

A rocker arm assembly for support of the haul rope of an aerial tramway or the like is disclosed. The assembly includes rocker arms, rope supporting sheaves rotatably mounted to the rocker arms and cantilevered from an inwardly facing side of the rocker arms. The rocker arms are additionally formed with rope catching groove or recess positioned outwardly of the sheaves and having a configuration which will enable not only the rope, but a hanger arm and grip to pass over the rope catcher in the event that the haul rope derails from the sheaves. The rocker arm assembly also preferably includes a platform which acts as a mount for the rocker arms and can be used for maintainence and repair of the rocker arms and rope supporting sheaves. Additionally, the rocker arm assembly includes haul rope derailment responsive apparatus formed to shutdown the tramway operation upon derailment of the rope from the sheaves.
