Abstract: Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, a launching device including a transmitter configured to generate a radio frequency signal on a transmission medium, wherein the transmitter is included in a launching circuit with the transmission medium having an electrical return path. A cylindrical coupler launches the radio frequency signal from an aperture of the cylindrical coupler as a guided electromagnetic wave that is bound to an outer surface of the transmission medium, wherein the guided electromagnetic wave propagates along the outer surface of the transmission medium without an electrical return path. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Abstract: In accordance with one or more embodiments, a communication system, includes at least one launcher configured to generate first guided electromagnetic waves in response to a first communication signal conveying first data, wherein the first guided electromagnetic waves are guided by a structure within a cable and propagate within the cable via a plurality of guided wave modes without requiring an electrical return path; wherein the cable comprises a plurality of uninsulated conductors that are stranded together, wherein the plurality of uninsulated conductors form a plurality of interstitial areas that are bounded by conductive surfaces of at least three of the plurality of uninsulated conductors, and wherein the structure comprises one of the plurality of interstitial areas.

Abstract: In accordance with one or more embodiments, an antenna system includes a dielectric antenna having a feedpoint and an aperture. A fractal patch antenna is configured to receive a signal via a feedline and to generate an electromagnetic wave in response to the signal. A waveguide is configured to couple the electromagnetic wave to the feedpoint, wherein the dielectric antenna is configured to radiate a free space wireless signal from the aperture in response to the electromagnetic wave.

Abstract: In accordance with one or more embodiments, a system can include a plurality of cables, wherein each cable of the plurality of cables includes an insulation layer comprising a helix structure. The helix structure of each cable of the plurality of cables can facilitate formation of a plurality of interstitial pathways between the plurality of cables. The system can further include communication device coupled to the plurality of cables, where the communication device facilitates generating electromagnetic waves that propagate along the plurality of interstitial pathways without requiring an electrical return path. The first plurality of electromagnetic waves and the second plurality of electromagnetic waves are guided by a power line of a utility pole. A third communication signal is received from a smart grid device. A fourth communication signal is transmitted to the smart grid device. Other embodiments are disclosed.
