Abstract: Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, obtaining power, by a communication device, from a current passing through a transmission medium via an inductive coupling between the communication device and the transmission medium where the communication device is physically connected with the transmission medium and providing communications, by the communication device, by electromagnetic waves that propagate without utilizing an electrical return path, wherein the electromagnetic waves are guided by one of the transmission medium or a dielectric core of a cable coupled to a feed point of a dielectric antenna. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Abstract: Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, coupler having an array of dielectric antennas positioned around an outer surface of a transmission medium. A processing system can perform operations including selecting at least two dielectric antennas of the array of dielectric antennas, and configuring at least two transmitters coupled to the at least two dielectric antennas according to a wave mode type to generate, via the at least two dielectric antennas, first wireless signals and second wireless signals that combine to induce propagation of electromagnetic waves along a transmission medium according to the wave mode type without requiring an electrical return path. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Abstract: Aspects of the subject disclosure may include an antenna having a feedline configured to receive a first signal and a second signal. A dielectric antenna body is configured to transmit the first signal as a first free space wireless signal and further configured to transmit the second signal as a first guided electromagnetic wave that is bound to a surface of a transmission medium, wherein the first guided electromagnetic wave propagates along the surface of the transmission medium without requiring an electrical return path. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for forwarding data in hybrid wireless mesh networks. The method includes configuring a number of mesh network nodes as potential relay nodes (PRNs) in an overlay network associated with a hybrid wireless mesh network, streaming data packets from a source node to a destination node using a native data forwarding algorithm of the hybrid wireless mesh network, dynamically identifying relay nodes (RNs) among PRNs in the overlay network, creating secondary paths for sending data packets towards selected RNs in the overlay network, and relaying data packets from RNs to the destination node using the overlay network.
