    摘要: An optical interconnect employing planar volume Bragg hologram technology in two dimensions comprises a dichromated gelatin planar volume Bragg hologram disposed in a glass planar optical path. Multiplexed Bragg plane sets selectively diffract information-bearing light signals such as voice, image, or computer data signals in a VLSI system from a laser diode or LED source coupled to the planar optical path toward high-speed photodiodes. The holographic planar optical interconnect can interconnect up to 1000 different signals between VLSI microelectronic components and systems.

    摘要: Methods and apparatuses for still image compression, video compression and automatic target recognition are disclosed. The method of still image compression uses isomorphic singular manifold projection whereby surfaces of objects having singular manifold representations are represented by best match canonical polynomials to arrive at a model representation. The model representation is compared with the original representation to arrive at a difference. If the difference exceeds a predetermined threshold, the difference data are saved and compressed using standard lossy compression. The coefficients from the best match polynomial together with the difference data, if any, are then compressed using lossless compression. The method of motion estimation for enhanced video compression sends I frames on an “as-needed” basis, based on comparing the error between segments of a current frame and a predicted frame. If the error exceeds a predetermined threshold, which can be based on program content, the next frame sent will be an I frame. The method of automatic target recognition (ATR) including tracking, zooming, and image enhancement, uses isomorphic singular manifold projection to separate texture and sculpture portions of an image. Soft ATR is then used on the sculptured portion and hard ATR is used on the texture portion.

    摘要: Systems and methods for shaping light from a liquid crystal display are described. A holographic high contrast viewing screen embedded in a liquid crystal display includes a first substrate; a first electrode connected to said first substrate; a light shaping holographic surface relief diffuser connected to said first electrode, said light shaping holographic surface relief diffuser having a first orientation and a first refractive index; a liquid crystal adjacent said light shaping holographic surface relief diffuser, the liquid crystal having a second refractive index that is substantially equal to the first refractive index, in the absence of a driving voltage applied to the first electrode and the second electrode; an alignment layer adjacent said liquid crystal, said alignment layer having a second orientation that is substantially orthogonal to said first orientation; a second electrode connected to said alignment layer; and a second substrate connected to said second electrode. The second refractive index varies as a function of the driving voltage, which is applied between the first electrode and the second electrode. The systems and methods provide advantages in that the field of view, including the horizontal and vertical extent, can be determined, in advance by the manufacturer.

    摘要: A multiwavelength sensor for sensing light scattered from a scattering medium includes a light source, a uniform broadband reflection grating at the Littrow position, a fiber, and a detector. Light from the source is incident on the grating, which diffracts the light. The fiber has a first end into which the light diffracted from the grating is received and has a second end from which the light exits, the fiber being positioned so that the light is incident upon and scattered from the scattering medium. At least some of the light scattered from the medium is scattered back into the second end and out of the first end and incident upon the diffraction grating. Light out of the first end and diffracted from the grating is incident on the detector. The system is fully transparent so that light traveling toward the second end and light traveling back toward the first end are optically isolated and cross-talk is substantially nonexistent.

    摘要: An authentication system using a correlator that correlates an input with a reference wherein at least one of the input and reference comprises a phase volume mask having structures, preferably points, that are each less than about six microns in size and can have an aspect ratio (AR) greater than 1:1 so as to produce a phase encoded random pattern having millions of combinations in a mask that is as small as one square millimeter. The random pattern can be convolved with a second pattern, such as a biometric pattern, to produce a phase convolved mask. The correlator preferably is a nonlinear joint transform correlator that can use “chirp” encoding to permit the input to be located in a different plane than the reference. The correlator optically Fourier transforms images of the reference and input that are thereafter nonlinearly transformed and inverse Fourier transformed by a processor to determine the presence or absence of a correlation spike indicative of authenticity. A spatial light modulator (SLM) can be used as an input or reference and preferably is a liquid crystal panel having pixels or elements whose phase or grey scale intensity can be selectively controlled by a processor. The SLM can be used to display a biometric pattern, preferably scanned in real time from a person, that is correlated against an input or reference that can comprise a label on a card, a tag, or another object.
