Abstract: A method comprises obtaining reference data about a 3D calibration object, the reference data comprising known coordinates for a plurality of points on the object, and obtaining measurement data comprising measurements for the plurality of points on the object, the measurement data having been generated based on scanning of the object by an uncalibrated intraoral scanner. The method comprises comparing the measurement data to the reference data to determine differences therebetween and applying the determined differences between the measurement data and the reference data for the plurality of points to a function to generate a compensation model that compensates for one or more inaccuracies of the intraoral scanner. The compensation model is then stored, wherein the compensation model causes the intraoral scanner to be a calibrated intraoral scanner and is usable to correct measurement errors of the intraoral scanner caused by the one or more inaccuracies of the intraoral scanner.

Abstract: A method of generating a three-dimensional virtual model of an intraoral object includes capturing, by an intraoral scanner for performing intraoral scans, surface scan data of the intraoral object while changing a position of at least one lens of focusing optics of the intraoral scanner, wherein the surface scan data comprises depth data for a plurality of points of the intraoral object. The method further includes adjusting the depth data for one or more of the plurality of points based at least in part on a value associated with a temperature of at least a portion of the imaging apparatus. The method further includes generating the three-dimensional virtual model of the intraoral object using the adjusted depth data.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for generating a model of a subject's teeth. Described herein are intraoral scanning methods and apparatuses for generating a three-dimensional model of a subject's intraoral region (e.g., teeth) including both surface features and internal features. These methods and apparatuses may be used for identifying and evaluating lesions, caries and cracks in the teeth. Any of these methods and apparatuses may use minimum scattering coefficients and/or segmentation to form a volumetric model of the teeth.

Abstract: A confocal imaging apparatus includes an illumination module to generate an array of light beams. Focusing optics perform confocal focusing of an array of light beams onto a non-flat focal surface and direct the array of light beams toward a three dimensional object to be imaged. A translation mechanism adjusts a location of at least one lens to displace the non-flat focal surface along an imaging axis. A detector measures intensities of an array of returning light beams that are reflected off of the three dimensional object and directed back through the focusing optics. Intensities of the array of returning light beams are measured for locations of the at least one lens for determination of positions on the imaging axis of points of the three dimensional object. Detected positions of one or more points are adjusted to compensate for the non-flat focal surface.

Abstract: A system includes a scanner comprising a light source to emit light onto an object, and an image sensor to form a sequence of images of the object under a plurality of different conditions. The system includes a computing device to perform a calibration of the scanner by determining, from the sequence of images, differences in measured coordinates for a plurality of points on the object under the plurality of different conditions, generating or updating one or more compensation models that compensate for inaccuracies of the intraoral scanner based at least in part on the differences in the measured coordinates for the plurality of points of the object between the plurality of different conditions, and storing the one or more compensation models. The one or more compensation models cause the intraoral scanner to be a calibrated intraoral scanner.

Abstract: Systems and methods for monitoring a subject's teeth during orthodontic treatment. An input 2D image of the subject's current teeth including a wide angle occlusal view of the subject's upper and/or lower jaw at a current treatment stage can be received. Virtual camera parameters corresponding to the input 2D image can be determined. A rendered 2D image of the subject's teeth can be generated from a 3D model of the subject's upper and/or lower jaw at a planned treatment stage with the virtual camera parameters. Differences between the subject's teeth from the input 2D image and the rendered 2D image using tooth centers can be determined. An indicator indicating the differences can be output.
