A paper web (W) is dried in a forward dryer section (D) of a paper machine in downward open drying groups (G1 . . . G6) that apply single-wire draw. Then, in a finishing section the web (W) is surface-sized in a surface-sizing unit (20) and dried mainly by contact-free drying: partly by airbone web-dryers (31, 32, 34, 36) or by impingement drying. The power of the airbone web-drying/impingement drying is regulated on both sides of the web (W) such that the tendency of curling created in the web (W) in the forward dryer section (D) can be controlled.

A method in a dryer section of a paper or board machine for controlling curl of paper, in which steam treatment and/or moistening of the paper web is/are employed. The operations carried out in order to control the curl of the paper web are carried out in a number of stages when the web temperature is, during at least one stage, lower than 85.degree. C., preferably lower than 75.degree. C., and when the dry solids content of the web is in the range of K1-K2, wherein K1 is the ultimate dry solids content of the web -7% and K2 is the ultimate dry solids content +3%.

A method and device for drying a coated web. The coated web is first conveyed through a web heating unit (10, 32, 40), in which the temperature of the coated web is raised, typically to drying temperature, by directing jets of heating air at the coated web, the humidity a1 of the said heating air jets being higher than the humidity a2 of the drying air jets. After this the coated web is conveyed through at least one air dryer (34, 36, 38; 42, 44, 46), in which drying air jets are directed at the coated web for drying the coated web.

A web of paper or paperboard is manufactured by first forming a base web that is dried on the press section of papermaking machine. The base web is further dried on the dryer section of the papermaking machine and a base web speed differential, or draw, is set between the press section and the first dryer cylinder group of the dryer section, whereupon at least one surface of the web is surface sized. The draw is set to 3% maximum, and a surface size furnish is applied having a solids content of at least 15% of the total amount of size components and liquid in the furnish.

A method and apparatus for producing calendered paper by an on-line manufacturing system comprising at least a paper machine and a multi-nip calender. The method comprises following steps: removing water from a formed paper web by pressing, drying the pressed paper web by at least one dryer, calendering the dried web by the multi-nip calender, measuring a cross-machine moisture profile or a variable relative thereto, and altering the moisture of the web so that the moisture profile of the web in the cross-direction is even when the web enters the first nip of the calender.

The invention concerns a dryer-section concept of a paper/board machine and a method in the drying of a paper/board web (W). The dryer section comprises a number of drying cylinder groups (R.sub.I . . . R.sub.N), which comprise a single-wire draw, on whose support the web (W) is guided so that it meanders as loop-shaped from a drying cylinder onto a suction cylinder. The web (W)/the wire (H) is guided so that the web is placed against the face of the drying cylinder and the wire is placed outside. In the dryer-section concept, the web (W) is passed from one drying cylinder group (R.sub.I) into the next dryer group (R.sub.II) and further. According to the invention, at least some of the drying cylinders (K'.sub.1, K'.sub.2, K'.sub.3) include impingement units (100, 101, 102) or equivalent in connection with them, through which units a heated medium, preferably air or steam, is passed through the wire into connection with the web (W) so as to produce a two-sided drying effect and to increase the drying capacity.

The invention concerns a method and a device in the dryer section of a paper/board machine. In the dryer section a normal single-wire draw is applied at least partly, in which method the web (W) is passed through the dryer group on support of a drying wire (H). The drying wire (H) presses the web (W) on the drying cylinders (Kn, Kn+1 . . . ) against the heated cylinder faces, and on the reversing cylinders or rolls (Sn, Sn+1 . . . ) between the drying cylinders (10) the web (W) remains at the side of the outside curve. There is one integrated device, through which a support suction and/or blowing is produced in order to improve the runability of the web (W) and to keep the web (W) in contact with the face of the wire, and through which same device, additionally, impingement blowing is produced in order to dry the web (W) and/or to control its tendency of curling.
