A method of scheduling wireless data transmissions between a mobile terminal and a base station using multiple system carrier signals is disclosed. The method comprises receiving (101) in the mobile terminal information from the base station indicating available system carriers and transmitting from the mobile terminal information indicating the terminal's capability to handle non-contiguous system carriers; detecting (102) at least one dynamic parameter indicative of the terminal's current capability to handle non-contiguous system carriers; determining (103) from the dynamic parameter whether a situation has occurred in which the terminal's capability to handle non-contiguous system carriers has changed; transmitting (104), in such case, a connection release request to the base station; and transmitting (105) a connection setup request and information indicating the terminal's changed capability to handle non-contiguous system carriers to the base station. Thus system carriers that can be handled by the terminal in the present situation can be allocated.

In a heterogeneous cell deployment a mobile terminal may need to receive control data transmissions from a macro node at the same time as a pico node is transmitting user data for the mobile terminal, using the same frequency or set of frequencies. This can result in a problematic interference situation. According to several embodiments of the present invention, at least one of two general approaches is used to mitigate the interference situation described above. In a first approach, the pico node's transmission power is reduced in some time intervals, thereby reducing the interference to a level where reception from the macro node is possible. In a second approach, which may be combined with the first approach in some cases, the data transmitted from the macro node is provided by the pico node, either alone or in combination with the macro node.

A adaptive method implemented by a mobile station improves the likelihood of detecting control messages transmitted to the mobile station in band on a shared downlink traffic channel. When the mobile station expects a control message to be transmitted on the shared downlink traffic channel, the mobile station may adapt the receiver configuration and/or receiver parameters to reduce a likelihood of missed detection of control messages. In one embodiment, the mobile station is configured to adjust a correlation threshold used for said scheduled transmission detection to reduce the likelihood of a missed detection.

A cell searching procedure is modified to enable a user terminal to determine whether a detected signal originates in a known cell or a new cell having the same cell identifier as the known cell. When a signal is detected, the user terminal determines the cell identifier and timing of the detected signal. If the cell identifier matches a known cell and the timing is outside the timing window of the known cell, the user terminal compares detected signal with a corresponding received signal received from the known cell having the same cell identifier as the detected signal source. The user terminal determines, based on said comparison, whether the detected signal is from the known cell or a new cell.

According to the teachings presented herein, a method and apparatus provide a reduced search space for blindly decoding a message included in a signal received at a communication receiver, where the message has an unknown format. Improving blind detection efficiency in this manner offers numerous advantages, including but not limited to lower power consumption through reduced processing overhead, and lower power consumption through expanded sleep opportunities. As a non-limiting example, the communication receiver comprises a mobile station configured for operation according to Long Term Evolution (LTE) standards, as promulgated by the 3GPP for E-UTRA systems, where the mobile station is configured to reduce a search space of DCI message decoding by determining message format likelihoods and blindly decoding a received DCI message based on the message format likelihoods.

The linking simplifies the cell search process by allowing user equipment to determine cell identities based on mapping detected synchronization signal sequences to the corresponding reference signal or to the corresponding subset of reference signals in embodiments where there are more reference signal sequences than synchronization signal sequences. In at least one embodiment, the network is a 3G LTE network and at least the Primary Synchronization Signal (P-SyS) sequences are linked to the Downlink (DL) reference symbol sequences according to a defined mapping, thereby allowing to user equipment to determine cell identities from detected P-SyS sequences.
