Abstract: An in-ear headphone comprises an earbud body constructed and arranged for positioning in an ear canal of a wearer, and configured to have a distal end farther into the ear canal than a proximal end. The earbud body includes a cavity and an opening to the cavity. The in-ear headphone further comprises a transducer in the opening to the cavity, a portion of the transducer facing outward from the opening; a microphone at the distal end of the earbud body; an earbud tip on the earbud body and complying with a surface of the earbud body; and an acoustically resistive mesh structure at a distal end of the earbud tip. The mesh structure covers the microphone and the portion of the transducer facing outward from the opening.

In some cases, an ANR system for a wearable audio device includes: a fixed filter that receives a signal from a feedback microphone and outputs a noise reduction signal, where the fixed filter is configured to provide ANR with a nominal loop gain; and a tunable filter that outputs an adjusted noise reduction signal by modulating the nominal loop gain in response to low frequency noise being detected in the noise reduction signal, where modulating the nominal loop gain includes reducing low frequency ANR performance.

Abstract: Various aspects include a wearable audio device having active noise reduction (ANR), where the ANR device includes: a feedback microphone; an electroacoustic transducer; and a feedback compensator configured to output a noise reduction signal to the electroacoustic transducer in response to a feedback signal from the feedback microphone, wherein the feedback compensator includes a tunable filter that modulates a loop gain in response to an adverse low frequency event being detected in the noise reduction signal outputted from the tunable filter, wherein the tunable filter is configured to maintain a substantially similar loop gain shape near a low frequency cross-over as the low frequency cross-over changes during loop gain modulation.

Abstract: An active noise reduction (ANR) earphone system includes a feedback microphone for detecting noise, feedback circuitry, responsive to the feedback microphone, for applying a digital filter Kfb to an output of the feedback microphone to produce an antinoise signal, an electroacoustic driver for transducing the antinoise signal into acoustic energy, a housing supporting the feedback microphone and the driver near the entrance to the ear canal, and an ear tip for coupling the housing to the external anatomical structures of a first ear of a user and positioning the housing to provide a consistent acoustic coupling of the feedback microphone and the driver to the ear canal of the first ear. The acoustic coupling includes a tube of air defined by the combination of the housing and ear tip, having a length L and effective cross-sectional area A such that the ratio L/A is less than 0.6 m−1.
