Abstract: A forceps includes an end effector assembly having first and second jaw members. Each of the jaw members includes a proximal flange extending therefrom. Each of the proximal flanges defines a bifurcated configuration having first and second spaced-apart flange components. The first flange component of the first jaw member is configured to pivotably engage the second flange component of the second jaw member via a first protrusion-aperture coupling. The first flange component of the second jaw member is configured to pivotably engage the second flange component of the first jaw member via a second protrusion-aperture coupling different from the first protrusion-aperture coupling. One or both of the jaw members is pivotable relative to the other about the first and second protrusion-aperture couplings between a spaced-apart position and an approximated position for grasping tissue therebetween.

Abstract: A forceps includes an end effector assembly having a stop and a plurality of overmold teeth within at least one jaw member. One (or both) of the jaw members is moveable relative to the other between a spaced-apart position and an approximated position for grasping tissue therebetween. One (or both) of the jaw members includes a stop molded within an insulative housing, and an insulator plate with the overmold teeth formed from plastic. The overmold teeth extend through openings within a sealing plate and protrude past the tissue sealing surface of the sealing plate. The stop primarily controls the gap distance between opposing jaw members by bearing most of an applied load and the overmold teeth assist in controlling the gap distance by bearing the remaining applied load.

Abstract: A surgical system for detecting perfusion includes at least one surgical camera and a computing device. The at least one surgical camera is configured to obtain image data of tissue at a surgical site including first image data and second image data that is temporally-spaced relative to the first image data. The computing device is configured to receive the image data from the at least one surgical camera and includes a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions configured to cause the computing device to detect differences between the first and second image data, determine a level of perfusion in the tissue based on the detected differences between the first and second image data, and provide an output indicative of the determined level of perfusion in the tissue.

Abstract: An electrosurgical instrument end effector has first and second jaw members each including an electrically conductive tissue-contacting surface. The first and second jaw members are configured to grasp and electrosurgically treat tissue between the tissue-contacting surfaces. A thermal cutting element includes a body portion extending along the tissue-contacting surface of the second jaw member and a distal probe portion extending distally therefrom. The distal probe portion extends distally beyond a distal-most extent of the second jaw member, has a free end distally-spaced from this distal-most extent, and is exposed about the entire outer periphery thereof between the distal-most extent the free end. The body portion of the thermal cutting element is energizable for thermally treating tissue grasped between the tissue-contacting surfaces, while the distal probe portion of the thermal cutting element is energizable for thermally treating tissue positioned distally of the first and second jaw members.

Abstract: An enhanced haptic feedback system for medical diagnostics includes a laparoscope configured to be inserted into a body cavity to view tissue and obtain an image of the viewed tissue. An imaging device is configured to acquire physiological data about tissue, process the acquired physiological data, and output the processed data to a graphical user haptic interface (GUHI) capable of generating tangible sensations utilizing one or more haptic interfaces. The GUHI is configured to combine the image received from the laparoscope and the processed physiological data received from the imaging device to provide tangible sensations on both a front screen of the GUHI and a rear screen of the GUHI allowing a surgeon the sensation of feeling for abnormal tissue conditions between the surgeon's hands.
