Abstract: Techniques for torque compensation include a system include actuating means coupled to a clamping means and processing means. The processing means is configured to acquire an initial torque limit for the clamping means; adjust the initial torque limit based on an angle of a wrist of the clamping means to obtain an adjusted torque limit; and drive, subject to the adjusted torque limit, the actuating means to cause the clamping means to clamp a material.

Abstract: Systems and methods for detecting, characterizing, and addressing surgical smoke are disclosed. In some embodiments, a surgical system receives image data representing an image of a surgical environment and generates sets of values based on the received image. The sets of values may include representations of atmospheric light in the image and representations of contrast values in the image. The system may determine from the sets of values whether predetermined smoke severity criteria are met, and may responsively automatically engage and/or disengage one or more surgical devices, such as a surgical smoke evacuation system and/or an image processing system (e.g., a video enhancement feature) configured to improve quality of smoky surgical images.

Abstract: A method for evacuating particulates from a surgical site is disclosed. The method comprises communicatively connecting a particulate evacuation module and a surgical hub, wherein the surgical hub comprises a surgical hub enclosure, and wherein the particulate evacuation module is configured to be received within the surgical hub enclosure. The method further comprises removing a particulate from the surgical site and into the particulate evacuation module, analyzing the removed particulate, and modifying an operation of the particulate evacuation module based on the analysis of the removed particulate.

Abstract: In some embodiments an apparatus for providing access for a medical procedure in a patient's body cavity includes a stem configured for insertion through an opening in a body cavity wall. The stem has a bore and a cap is disposed at a proximal end thereof and includes an entry port in communication with the bore which receives an instrument to be inserted into the body cavity. An inflatable annular seal is disposed on the stem proximate the cap and a conduit extends through the cap providing pressurized gas at a first outlet in fluid communication with the body cavity providing insufflation pressure. A second outlet of the conduit is in fluid communication the seal, which when disposed inside the body cavity proximate the wall and inflated by pressurized gas, bears on an inner surface of the wall urging the cap into contact with an outer surface of the wall while sealing the opening.

Abstract: An electrosurgical instrument includes first and second jaw members each including an outer jaw housing, a tissue-treating plate, and a longitudinally-extending knife channel. The electrosurgical instrument also includes a knife actuator and a knife assembly operably coupled to the knife actuator. The knife assembly includes an elongated tube defining a longitudinal lumen and an elongated shaft having a proximal portion coupled to the knife actuator and a distal portion configured to be received through the longitudinal lumen. The distal portion of the elongated shaft includes an enlarged distal end portion configured to prevent movement of the elongated shaft relative to the elongated tube. The knife assembly also includes a knife blade having a pair of opposing lateral sides and a sharpened distal end configured to cut tissue. The elongated tube is configured to be coupled to one of the pair of opposing lateral sides of the knife blade.

Abstract: A modular endoscope system comprises an exoskeleton, a camera unit couplable to the exoskeleton, a therapeutic unit couplable to the exoskeleton, a steering unit couplable to the exoskeleton, and a control unit couplable to the exoskeleton. A method for building a modular endoscope comprises determining camera and therapeutic capabilities of the endoscope, selecting an exoskeleton for the endoscope, attaching a camera unit and therapeutic unit, if such capabilities are determined, to the selected exoskeleton to satisfy the determined capabilities, and attaching a control unit to the exoskeleton to control any camera unit and therapeutic unit attached to the exoskeleton. A method of processing modular endoscope components for performing a surgical procedure comprises identifying a patient to receive a treatment, selecting components of the endoscope to perform the treatment, treating the patient with the endoscope, and deconstructing the components of the endoscope into reusable and disposable components.

Abstract: Provided is an endoscopic vessel harvesting system comprising a direct current (DC) power control system connected to a therapeutic tool comprising a heating element. The DC power control system may include an input connection to receive power from a power supply. A first power control circuit may supply constant output power during a first time interval to heat the heating element to a target temperature. A second power control circuit may supply pulsed output power during a second time interval to maintain a temperature of the heating element within a target temperature range. An output connection may receive the output power and may supply controlled power to the heating element by supplying the constant output power during the first time interval, the pulsed output power during the second time interval, followed by a third time interval during which no power is supplied. Methods and systems are also disclosed.

Abstract: A hand grip apparatus for receiving operator input includes a body having a proximal end and a distal interface end for coupling to an input apparatus. A first control lever is attached to the body and extends away from the proximal end and terminates in a finger grip for receiving one of the operator's fingers. A second control lever is attached to the body and extends away from the proximal end terminating in a thumb grip for receiving the operator's thumb. Movement of at least one of the control levers is operable to produce a first control signal representing the movement. An input control is included on the body between the grip ends and has an actuator surface angled towards the finger grip end and configured to produce a second control signal in response to actuation by one of the operator's fingers.
