摘要: In effecting a joint between two optical fibres an elongate gauge having a cross-sectional shape and size corresponding to that of each of the optical fibres to be jointed is laid on a substantially flat surface of a soft, substantially non-resilient metallic body, e.g. annealed copper, and is pressed into the surface to form in, and between two edges of, the surface a groove of a substantially complementary cross-sectional size. The gauge is removed and the two optical fibres are aligned in the groove so formed in such a way that neighboring ends of the optical fibres substantially abut. A second body having a flat surface is applied to the grooved surface in such a way that its flat surface is in interfacial contact with the grooved surface, and the two bodies are secured together.

摘要: A splash guard and storage apparatus for use with plungers is disclosed. The apparatus includes a shield, a handle, grip, and basin. The plunger rod may be inserted through the shield, handle, and grip. The shield may be positioned along the length of the handle with the grip to block debris that might be expelled during the use of a standard plunger to unclog an apparatus such as a sink or toilet. Additionally, the shield is designed to be attached to the basin, and the apparatus further includes several locking embodiments to keep the shield attached to the basin. The basin further includes several embodiments of the base, such as the addition of dimples or ribs, to allow fresh air to circulate around the suction cup of the plunger. Additionally, a mesh weave may be inserted into the basin to allow for retention of anti-bacterial chemicals, which contact the plunger during storage.

摘要: An electric conductor suitable for use in an overhead electrical and optical transmission system comprises a layer or layers of helically wound wires, at least one elongate compartment within and extending throughout the length of the conductor and, loosely housed in the elongate compartment, at least one optical fibre ribbon structure comprising a plurality of optical fibres and flexible elongate reinforcing elements of resilient material arranged side by side and embedded in an elongate body of plastics material, each resilient reinforcing element being set in such a form that the ribbon structure follows a path of smoothly curved undulations whose axes of curvature lie parallel to one another and normal to the longitudinal axis of the ribbon structure. If, when the conductor is installed or in service, the undulating ribbon structure is subjected to a tensile force, the ribbon structure will straighten in a lengthwise direction against the action of the undulating resilient reinforcing elements thereby reducing the tensile force otherwise applied to the optical fibres and, when the tensile force is removed, the ribbon structure will return towards its original undulating form.

摘要: A system and method is provided for incentivizing players to visit a gambling location. In one aspect, a qualified person is invited to play an electronic game which has a plurality of outcomes, at least one of which is a winning outcome. In one embodiment, the qualified person may be required to redeem the outcome at the gambling location. In another embodiment, the person may be required to redeem the outcome at a redemption location. In another aspect, a method is provided for permitting a person to take one or more actions within a gambling location and in response inviting the person to play an electronic game separate from the games offered in a gambling environment at the gambling location, where the game has a plurality of outcomes, at least one of which is a winning outcome, and if the person obtains a winning outcome, requiring the person to redeem the at least one outcome at the gambling location. In one embodiment, the method includes the acts of qualifying a person, and in response to the act of qualifying the person, performing acts of providing an award to the qualified person and inviting the person to visit a gambling location to redeem the award. A method is provided for incentivizing players to return to a gambling location after a previous visit. One aspect relates to a method for providing additional incentives to a frequent player program member to visit a gambling location such as a casino. In one example, the ease of using the Internet or other remote technologies is combined with advantages of a frequent player program to encourage players to return to the casino. A prize may be revealed in an online game, and the prize may need to be redeemed at the location of the casino. In one example game format, the player may be provided game credits to a player to play one or more online games that reveal prizes. The prizes may include, for example, an amount of non-cashable credit that may be used by the player to play one or more games located at the gambling location, thus encouraging player return. Other prizes, such as, for example, complimentary offers and/or promotional prizes may be awarded that can only be redeemed by the player by returning to the gambling location. Further, another aspect relates to providing special incentives for remote entry of casino affiliation or membership cards. The special incentives may include providing a prize or award to frequent player program members that remotely use his or her membership. In one example, the player is provided an indication of winning an incentive during play of an online game. In another example, the player may be required to obtain the winnings at the casino to encourage players to return to the casino.

摘要: The present invention contemplates a system and method for controlling or adjusting the accuracy of an exhaust gas sensor utilizing the impedance of the sensing element. In one embodiment, a periodic AC signal is superimposed over low frequency or DC output signal produced by the gas sensor. The AC current flowing through the gas sensor is a function of the actual impedance of the sensor, which is in turn a function of the temperature of the sensor. Thus, the invention further contemplates an impedance sensor circuit connected to an output of the gas sensor. The output of the impedance sensor circuit is a peak voltage that is indicative of the AC voltage drop across the sensor, and ultimately the impedance of the sensing element. This peak voltage is utilized to control the operation of the heating element in a closed loop control system in which the thermal output of the heating element is continuously varied as a function of the magnitude signal to accurately maintain a consistent temperature for the exhaust gas sensor. In a specific embodiment of the invention, the impedance sensor circuitry includes a bandpass filter centered around the frequency of the superimposed AC signal to eliminate spurious noise. The output from the bandpass filter is provided to a half-wave rectifier, the output of which is the peak voltage signal indicative of the sensor impedance.

摘要: An optical fibre element for use in an optical cable comprises a flexbile elongate member having within and partially bounded by the elongate member throughout its length an elongate compartment; at least one optical fibre loosely housed in the elongate compartment; and means for retaining the optical fibre within the elongate compartment. The elongate member is resiliently set in such a form that the central longitudinal axis of the member follows a longitudinally extending path which, between any two longitudinally spaced positions, is greater in length than the rectilinear distance between the two positions. When the resiliently set elongate member is subjected to a longitudinally applied tensile force, the elongate member will tend to straighten in a lengthwise direction against the action of its resilient set, thereby to reduce the tensile force applied to the optical fibre. When the tensile force is removed, the elongate member will return under the action of its resilient set towards its original form. Two or more such optical fibre elements may be assembled together to form an assembly of optical fibre elements for use in an optical cable.
