    Abstract: A surgical cutting instrument for cutting tissue includes an outer cannula with a cutting opening and a cutting member within the cannula. The cutting member is connected to a source of reciprocation, and as the cutting member reciprocates the cutting member head is guided by a sloped member within the cannula to essentially a zero clearance position relative to a cutting edge of the cutting opening of the cannula. The instrument cleanly severs tissue extending through the cutting opening into the outer cannula.

    Abstract: A biopsy instrument for use in a biopsy gun includes a hollow outer needle defining a lumen therethrough and an inner needle slidably engaged within the lumen. The inner needle defines a cavity adjacent its distal end for receiving a tissue sample. A first hub is attached to the proximal end of the inner needle, and a second hub is attached to the proximal end of the outer needle. An elongated pin having a first end and a second end is fixedly attached to the first hub at the first end of the pin. The second end is in contact with the second hub so that the hub and pin are slideable relative to each other. A stop engagement between the second end of the pin and the second hub is configure to prevent disengagement of the needles and to maintain a specific physical relationship between the hubs.

    Abstract: A surgical cutting instrument includes a hollow hub 15 that has a working portion 16 which terminates at a working end 17 and a connection portion 18 which terminates at a connection end. The connection portion 18 defines a cavity 20 and a lock member 22, which projects from an outer surface 21 of the connection portion 18. A surgical cutting element extends from the working end 17 and is operationally connected to a source of motion. A hollow hub connector 60 has a cylindrical wall 61 with a hand-piece connection portion 62 and a hub engagement portion 65. The hub engagement portion defines a chamber 70 for receiving the connection portion 18 of the hub 15. The chamber 70 has a longitudinal axis A1 parallel to the length of the hub connector 60. The hub engagement portion 65 further defines a channel 75 through the cylindrical wall 61 for receiving the lock member 22. The channel is in communication with the chamber 70 and has a longitudinal section 76 defined along the length L of the connector. The channel also has a second transverse section 77 communicating with the longitudinal section 76 at a first end 78 and having a second opposite end 79. Further, the channel has a locking recess 81 defined in the wall 62 perpendicularly to the transverse section 77 and in communication with the opposite end 79 of the transverse section 77. The locking recess 81 is sized to receive the lock member 22. A spring element 100 urges the lock member 22 into the locking recess 81 when the locking member 22 is rotated into the opposite end 79 of the transverse section 77 of the channel 75.

    Abstract: An automatic tissue sampling device includes a housing having an upper opening and a cover closable over the opening. A biopsy needle assembly is operatively disposed within the device, and includes an outer cannula and an inner stylet. A drive mechanism includes a cannula carriage and a stylet carriage slidably disposed within the housing and a system of springs for driving the first and second carriages to pierce a tissue site and obtain a tissue sample. The cannula and stylet of the needle assembly are each supported on the respective carriages by corresponding hubs. The hubs are configured to be received within the carriages to impart driving motion from the carriages to the needle assembly. In one aspect of the invention, the hubs each include a flag attached to the hub and projecting laterally away from the longitudinal axis of the hub. Each flag is sized to be manually grasped to install or remove the hubs from the carriages. The hubs also include a tab projecting outward from the hub opposite the flag. The tabs can be configured to reside within tab slots defined in each of the carriages to lock the hubs to the carriages in axial motion.
